Apple moves 'aggressively' to limit OS X x86 videos

Apple is moving aggressively to limit the spread of the videos showing Intel-based versions of Mac OS X running on standard PCs. The company has reportedly sent "cease and desist" orders to news websites as well as other parties, demanding that the sites remove links to the videos showing "hacked" versions of Mac OS X running on non-Apple certified systems. Mac website MacBidouille reports that it received an "amazingly aggressive email asking for the immediate removal of all links to the videos." The site, along with other sites on the Internet, had used the videos to support news reports that hackers were able to successfully workaround Apple's a special TPM chip (Trusted Platform Module), which was designed to prevent Mac OS X from running on third-party computers.

Apple's TPM authentication scheme was designed to prevent users from installing Mac OS X for Intel CPUs on non-Apple certified PCs. Following the initial reports of success, hackers published videos, instructions, and even (illegally) distributed versions of the "hacked" operating system on file sharing sites such as Bitorrent.

Following the June announcement of its upcoming switch to the Intel-based architecture, the company provided developers with Mac OS X running on special pre-release models of Intel-based Macs ("Mactels"). Copies of the operating system were leaked and following initial reports of Apple's DRM to limit Mac OS X to Mactels, hackers worked to bypass Apple's system.

While the French news site immediately complied, the site said in an editorial that it had published the links to support its news reporting, but that it would have likely removed the links at Apple's request.

"We have removed the requested links, but we deeply think that it will not change anything regarding the problem affecting Cupertino. Indeed, Apple is using its legal department only when things go really wrong.

The video that we have published was only posted online to prove our comments and news."

I hate to say it, but I am wondering if Dvorak was right. A few weeks ago, he wrote an article speculating that Apple is secretly hoping for an x86 hack of OS X, as a way to market the OS. Apple is usually very quick to react legally to situations which it takes very seriously. The fact that it took weeks for Apple to send out cease and desist orders to these websites makes it look like Apple is going through the motions (e.g. to satisfy the Gates of Hell).

This is bunk. Who cares if it can run on Intel. No one but hackers and geeks. Apple is smart. Lets watch this maneuver play out. The day I cant wait for is when we see a Windows program run on a Mac in the Aqua environment. You think this is impossible or improbable, well, your wrong. The analogy to the classic environment is being crafted for Windows. Bwoooohhaaaaa!!!!

Well, I just read about the hack this week, so I don't know what you mean it took weeks for these to go out. Maybe Apple didn't hear about them until very recently either...

Ah, but this isn't about it running on intel. Technically the OS X beta is under an NDA, so publishing of any pictures of it is a big no-no, regardless of whether its hacked intel or just Apple intel.

Um, maybe you didn't realize it, but Classic right now does NOT run in the Aqua environement. It runs in the old OS 9 environment, with OS 9 menus, windows, controls, etc. Having windows run the same way, ooh, that's like, I don't know, VPC. Wow. The excitement of it all.

I can't wait until the day that I get a Virus on my Mac that was written by some kid running hacked OS X on his Dell. Thanks a lot steve, all the great reasons to be a Mac owner are just shi^^ing away day by day.

Mac OS X will one day be licensed to Dell, HP, Sony, Lenovo and Toshiba (or whichever of them are still making PCs). In the meantime Apple will try to profit from Macs for as long as it can (and wait for the Intel transition to be complete).

Because everyone knows that the rampant virus situation on PCs is due to the Intel processor and not, say, the Microsoft operating system.

keep in mind that it was a very pre-release version of Mac OS X that was Hacked. When Apple is actually manufacturing the Mactel machines, it will be a very different OS

"Sure, download and try it. It's just an experiment. You won't get hooked."

Just wait until the official version comes out and OOPS Apple fixed the security problem. Now it won't run on your Dell. You'll have to pay to feed your monkey.
