Windows 2000 worm

Tech news: A computer worm affecting Windows 2000 , including those at CNN, ABC and The New York Times this afternoon. The reach and identity of the worm is still unknown, though some analysts are pointing to recently-discovered exploits in Windows 2000 and some versions of Windows XP. David Perry of Trend Micro said that the attack seems to have been triggered by a new worm called rbot.ebq. Johannes Ullrich, director of the Sans Institute, a network security firm in Jacksonville, Florida, said the outage also may have been caused by the Zotob worm, which was released last weekend. Several versions of the worm have been released, some as late as Tuesday, Ullrich said.

    no more than they deserve

Perhaps now CNN will install a real OS and deploy their video using something other than WMV...

    Nah.

ANd they'll get nailed again, the next time there's a big outbreak. And the time after that. And the time after that.

so what if CNN goes down?

    What will we miss?

More reports about missing white women and runaway brides?

    mathematica 5.2 snafu

I just got a notice from Wolfram Research that 64-bit calculations were disabled by the latest software update patch released by Apple. They are apparently "working" on a fix to re-enable the lost functionality. To any of you out there who have noticed some problems with your setup, check your email for a notice from Mathematica.

While not a security problem, it does show you that no platform is immune from software problems.

    Food for thought...

If big corporations like Time Warner, ABC, with lots of money and IT staff etc can't keep their computers well-maintained, what chance does Joe Sixpack have at keeping this sh*t off his $299 Wal-Mart PC that he barely knows how to operate?
