MCE iBook SuperDrive upgrade supports "Dual Layer"

MCE Technologies today announced a new slot-loading 8X DVD-Recordable internal SuperDrive upgrade with both DVD+R DL ("Double Layer") and, for the first time in an iBook drive, DVD-R DL ("Dual Layer") support for Apple's iBook G3 and iBook G4 laptops. In addition to recording to 4.7GB DVD-R/RW and 4.7GB DVD+R/RW media at up to 8X speed, the MCE 8X SuperDrive can write to DVD+R DL and DVD-R DL media, recording up to 8.5GB of information at up to 4X speed on a single side of this media. The MCE 8X SuperDrive upgrade with Dual/Double Layer support carries is available immediately for $200.

"The MCE 8X SuperDrive upgrade for the iBook G4 and iBook G3 with both 4X Double, and Dual, Layer support can write to eight separate types of recordable media for unprecedented levels of performance and media compatibility in an iBook drive," said Arnie Ramirez, president of MCE.

The MCE 8X SuperDrive upgrade for iBooks G4 and G3 writes to standard DVD-R and DVD+R media at up to 8X speed, to standard DVD-RW media at up to 6X speed, DVD+RW media at up to 8X speed, and to 8.5GB DVD+R Double Layer media and 8.5GB DVD-R Dual Layer media at up to 4X speed. In addition, it writes to standard 650MB (74 minute) and 700MB (80 minute) CD-R media at up to 24X speed, writes to standard CD-RW media at up to 24X speed, reads DVD-ROM discs at up to 8X speed, and reads standard CD-ROM discs at up to 24X speed.

While the iBook G4 is already based on a slot-loading optical drive, the iBook G3's original tray-loading drive is replaced by the more convenient slot-loading MCE 8X SuperDrive. The iBook G3 upgrade is also designed with a white faceplate to match the finish of the iBook G3.

The MCE 8X SuperDrive upgrade with support for both DVD+R DL and DVD- R DL media is bootable and is fully compatible with Apple's iTunes, iDVD, burning/authoring using the Finder, iPhoto, and DVD Player. It offers full compatibility with Mac OS 9 through Mac OS X 10.4 using MCE's driver software, which is included with the drive.

The MCE 8X internal SuperDrive upgrade with Double/Dual Layer support is compatible with all iBook G4 and iBook G3 12-inch and 14-inch systems.
