Mike Matas joins Apple

Interface designer Mike Matas, one of the developers and the creative design mind behind , the company he co-founded with Wil Shipley only a year ago and move to Silicon Valley, to join Apple: "I am moving to down to Cupertino, CA where I will be designing user interfaces and drawing icons for Mac OS X at Apple," he said in a blog posting. Matas was the designer of Delicious Library, the immensely successful media cataloging software developed by Delicious Monster that generated "a small fortune" and won several awards, including an Apple Design Award for 'Best Mac OS X User Experience' (as well as a runner up for 'Best Product New to Mac OS X').

Gasp! Could this mean the end of development for Delicious Library, my favorite app?

...to apple for having the common sense to recognize this talent before anyone else could scoop him up. i guess we have some awesome interfaces to look forward to in the apple iApps these upcoming years.

move to cupertino?

The bay area is great, but I wouldn't move to downtown Cupertino exactly. Depending on how long he wants to make his commute, there are lots of cool towns nearby, but Cupertino ain't one of 'em. That place rolls up the sidewalks at 8PM, and there is nothing much to do. I'd move to The City personally, but that is a long commute.

Anyway, cool gig. Excellent the way it came to be too.

I understand interviews are under way to fill his chair at the coffee shop (where they all work). Someone save that seat!

My friends have been using this app for a while and I just took a good long time to play with it.... on my powerbook 12 inch hooked up to a 30inch Syntax Olevia LCD tv. This app is very cool and a friend brought over his iSight... I am saving up for one and it is a very well designed app and very useful. The scanning thing is awesome. Plus being able to turn the TV into an informational Kiosk in a way... an app a few friends of mine are working on to make a Star Trek Comm panel type device... all sorts of info in one place... a media/info center so to speak. But nuff said. This is a good day for Mike and Apple. Note to Apple,.. treat him good and you shall both be well rewarded.

Nuff said

cupertino living

some people, like myself and other programmers, don't want to live in the city. we have no life outside work, and rent and car insurance (if any) if cheaper the closer you live to the office. Besides, he could be a Vespa advocate, and drive his low-power scooter to work... so he'd need to be within 11 miles of his office in order for it to be efficient. Just another prospective on why he might have chosen downtown Cupertino.
