Apple releases Mac OS X 10.4.2 update

Mac OS X 10.4.2 update

Apple today released for Mac OS X 10.4 users is available on the Web as well.

Specifically, the update delivers:

file sharing using AFP and SMB/CIFS network file services
single sign-on authentication and reliable access to Active Directory servers
autologin for managed user accounts
AirPort and wireless access
Core Graphics, Core Audio, Core Image, including updated ATI and NVIDIA graphics drivers
Finder updates including finding on Kind and using Slideshow
synchronizing your iDisk with .Mac
installation reliability
managing Dashboard widgets
Address Book, Automator, iCal, iChat, Mail, Safari, and Stickies applications
compatibility with third party applications and devices

whew!

Hoping the update fixes all our problems. There were bugs in asr, applescript and Netboot on the OSX Server. I'll give it a try :)

Waiting ...

I will have to wait until i free up some HD space before i can install it (as i only have 1gb of free harddisk space at the moment). But i'm sure the widget manager will make it all worthwhile as i have SO many widgets :-)

if your'e' low on HD space, you might try:

iPhoto's "Emptry Trash" from the iPhoto Menu . . . I didn't know you had to do this to remove pictures from the drive.

I just gained back about 1gig of HD space (922 hi res photos) that were just sitting there . . .

Cheers, i will give that try. But i will probably have to just burn some stuff to DVD.

Safari hangs

I'd been anticipating this update because I wanted to rid Safari of its constant, several minute-long hangs, but 10.4.2 hasn't changed anything. My hope that it would was ruined less than an hour after installation, when Safari beachballed for a few minutes. Argh.

beach ball may be your connection not safari its self... usually when i have beach ball problems, both my desktop and laptop are slow loading pages, etc.

Safari still a jungle

Yup! Scroll bar in Safari still breaks up, now that's bad considering that it's one of the specific issues that's supposed to have been addressed!

A few other annoyances also remain but I'm too fed up to list them!

Has this update fixed the 'non-working' state of the TiBook display brightness keys?

I just got out of bed and have now installed the update, and Jeepers, Mr. Wilson, it is SO much snappier. I don't need my Rice Krispies to put the snap back into my morning.

i think the dashboard loads faster, will have to play more with it this weekend. i do love the dashboard manager it was definitely something long desired.

good, but some bugs re

Seems like a solid update here (orig. 12" powerbook). Does seem Snappier� overall--scrolling in Safari is smoother. Finder seems faster as well. But, a few minor glitches weren't fixed for me:

--cursor still momentarily flashes some double-sized glitchy pixels when changing state (when rolling over buttons, etc.) -- .Mac calendar syncing with my mac at work (also with 10.4.2) still says I'm modifying 80 calender items on each machine twice a day --can't resave in any Office 2004 apps to our Win2000 server (via SMB). I can save once, like ffor new documents; but if I make a change to the word doc and hit apple-S, it throws an error (new error text as of 10.4.2 says it's a permissions problem, which is helpful) and the document is DELETED from the server where it was, and the open file gets a random temp name like "File-1A908542.doc". Granted, there's probably something weird with our server's permissions, but this didn't happen in 10.3.9. --don't seem to have the cool ripple effect on my desktop when dropping a widget. No 2D hardware accel. yet, maybe?

this may be asking a lot of your IT department, but is it possible to have them turn on some Mac shares? connecting via SMB has limitations with filenames and such (though the permissions one is new for me).

Yeah, that's a hardware thing. You'd need a new video card to view that sort of effect.

Not so great

Well, I still get the beachball when I click on bookmarks in Safari, but scrolling there seems faster. There is still a bit of a delay when changing screen brightness and volume. What's up with that?

And my friend tells me that Word now hangs...

Sounds like someone needs to fix their fix.

Hm...

No vast changes that I can see. May be "snappier" but I hadn't rebooted in over 15 days so it may just be the "reboot effect". I like the new widget manager, the icon made me laugh actually. I'll check performance a bit later versus the 10.41 Xbench session I did a few days ago.

Dude, come on!

This is a great frickin' update! My computer was lagging for some reason (maybe something to do with USB Overdrive and Safari/Photoshop combo?) anyway, the thing is finally zipping around like it should be. Dashboard's great, and everything's finally come together for Tiger. GRrrrRrRRrrr!
