New iPod lineup from Apple features photos, color

Apple today announced new photo capabilities for its entire line of iPods, creating "a single line of white iPods that all feature color displays with the ability to view album artwork, photos and play slideshows in stunning color." The "simplified" white iPod photo lineup features a 20GB model, holding up to 5,000 songs priced at $300 and a 60GB model, holding up to 15,000 songs priced at $400 as well as a color iPod U2 Edition. Apple also said that, starting today a software update for Click Wheel iPods will deliver an easy-to-use Podcast menu to the new podcasting features in iTunes 4.9 (released early Tuesday morning). The menu will feature bookmarking within a Podcast and the ability to display Podcast artwork in color. Apple also reduced pricing by $20 on the iPod U2 Edition and the 1GB iPod shuffle.

"iPod customers love to enhance their listening experience with color," said Greg Joswiak, Apple's vice president of iPod Product Marketing. "By simplifying our iPod lineup to include 20GB and 60GB models with color screens and the new Podcast menu, iPod and iTunes provide the world's easiest and appealing way to discover, subscribe, manage and listen to Podcasts."

The 20GB and 60GB iPods for Mac or Windows are available immediately worldwide for a suggested retail price of $300 and $400 (a $50 price drop). The new iPod U2 Special Edition also includes a color screen, has been reduced in price to $330 (from $350), and only ships with a USB 2.0 cable. Apple also reduced 1GB iPod shuffle is now $130. Apple said the new Podcast menu is available starting today via a free iPod software update for all Click Wheel iPods and iPod minis.

No podcast support for 1-3G? Or just that we don't get a designated menu item?

Most likely no 'special' menu (ooh) or the like. But since podcasts are just AAC files (bookmarkable by the extension, like audiobooks or anything else), it should still just work.

At least one would hope.

But what's the deal with just a 20 and 60 GB models. No 40? Why not start at 40? Seems like a big gap there.

I thought they had an "event" planned for next week to do this... was the event a hoax?

As usual w/ their announcements, much is left out. What about that "updated" CPU that is far, far more power efficient than the old one (that allowed the latest mini's to get 20 hours of use)? I was expecting it to be a feature of the next round of updates...

to throw away my 10GB 2nd Generation Ipod. I can still do without a color display much too small to view pictures in a decent way and I don't need the 20GB yet. Should have lowered the price tag a little bit. So hopefully that way not the product Apple was talking about to be released..

My 2ct.

Where did Apple announce this? Or did you believe rumor sites? There's a reason Apple doesn't like rumor sites.

PodCast streams Lacking

I am not really impressed with the amount of podcasts available on the ITMS as of yet.

I knew the News catagory would exist, but expected at least some of the FOX, and CNN news casts to be online. ABC has a newscast and they also make Nightline available..but that's it.. Oh yeah, CNBC had somethinb but does anyone watch/listen to that station?

Anyway, I didn't even see Rush and I'm not a Rush fan persay but he's HUGE on the iPod (no pun intended) but he does Podcast. I can only assume maybe he charges for it (which I can see, unfortunately).

Anyway, I also noticed that there are VERY FEW morning shows... I really was looking forward to seeing more than 4 online..its sad.

Hands up who can name the CPU in the iPod. Hands up who cares. Rumor sites? What are you babbling about? You read them, then complain about them?

Not impressed about the number of podcasts? The software has been out for a few HOURS!

I was wondering when the heck this was going to happen. I was still hoping for FM and voice recording.

But some update is better than none. Still, the iPod is behind in features.
