Of course there aren't a ton of shows yet. Jiminy, podcasting was only invented about ten minutes ago. Now that Apple has created a simple means of getting content distributed to the world's most popular digital music player, you can expect a lot more content in short order.

I can't believe the amount of absolute whiners on here.

Sorry to be so negative, but I think this is great. I hate iPodder, because the software has a GUI straight from Windows 95. My other podcast software, Pod2Go, is going the way of the dinosaur (and is pretty buggy).

I'm happy to see Apple go this route. It can only get better from here.

This update is farcical. Apple really needs to make a product refresh. The lineup is getting old.

I have a 2nd generation iPod 10 GB - as far as I can tell PodCasts are not supported on this. I subscribed to a PodCast that shows up and plays in iTunes, but it doesn't seem to get synched to the iPod, even though I've checked through the iTunes preferences for iPod and PodCasts.

I know Apple started all of this, but other products have leapfrogged Apple in some of the features dept. Keep the $20 off the shuffle, Apple and give us a display and FM tuner. At least on the hd iPod line.

Apple updates the iPod line to al color, and lower prices throughout -- just as 'analysts' bemoan how Apple's iPod sales are bound to drop off (and everyone panics because of Creative's 'analysis').

Now that all music player makers have downgraded the earnings expectations, watch Apple pull further forward -- again!

(The new lower price on the shuffle will undoubtedly help as well)

I don't understand the desire for these silly add-on features.

The FM Tuners in MP3 players are garbage. And besides, don't people buy music players because the radio sucks? Otherwise, wouldn't they just buy a portable FM radio? They're way cheaper than an iPod.

And voice recorders? I've never seen anyone actually use a voice recorder except for a reporter - and they buy professional models, not the cheap toy features in an MP3 player.

Who the h*** wants an FM tuner? Nothing good on FM in the last 5 years.

Now an AM tuner, that I can dial up talk radio, the ball game, traffic and weather, etc. Now we'd be talking.

But we won't get that, because no one wants an AM tuner but me. We might get a useless FM tuner, but AM is so 'passe' that it'll be ignored.

Of course, there's no stopwatch on these things either, people, or is your bias for Apple making you miss this other obvious attachment.

gapless playback? Who'd want gapless playback? How would you know one song ended and another started without the gap? It would be too confusing to most users. They'd end up staring out the window going "Won't this blasted song ever finish!"

And you want to talk about useful features, how about support for player-piano spools. I've got all these spools, and nothing to play them on! Now that's a feature people would clamor for!

Why dont you just burn it to CD as a gapless file and then download that to the iPod?

I'd sure like a recording feature for business meetings. I don't need high-quality audio for that. The existing 3rd party mics for the iPods do OK, I just want something inexpensive (and I'm an Apple user?!? ;-). I would also like recording features for actual recording, so we don't have to bring a laptop out in the field to record audio for events. That does need to be high (near-cd) quality. And I still want it for $39!

because you shouldn't have to. FM/AM, why not both. Satisy everybody. How hard can it be. If you don't want to listen to the radio then don't. Maybe you have shi**y radio stations in your town. Maybe you like listening to the same Library of music over and over or paying a $1 a song. (Yes, I think the subscription model can coexists. I've bought almost a hundred songs but there is music I'd like to hear but not own) But FM should be there. FM at the gym to use with the TV sets, NPR, weather/traffic, etc. , AM for the game. How much would it costs, really? If you can get a freaking pen with a display and FM tuner for $6, then it shouldn't cost that much to put it in an iPod and knowing Apple it would be higher quality.

Of course, bluetooth would be even cooler but I can see that adding to the cost of the iPod.

It doensn't matter. I love my iPod but the current lineup is getting tired. I feel like I'm using it more and more as a portable hard drive for work. Unless something changes when the Sony Ericsson W800 or W600 comes out, I'll use that instead of carrying around an iPod, FM radio, phone, and a camera (although only 2MP) like so many people suggest because the iPod as it stands is already "perfect". Before you knock the W800 be sure to check it out first. It's Mac and open source friendly.

Okay, I'm done ranting.

To testudo: Many of electronic music artists make their albums or mixes gapless but you can recognize songs if you listen to such kind of the music. Or even easier to look into the iPod screen or iTunes window. Gapless playback feature would be nice for (i assume) not less than 10% of iPod owners and won't harm different music listeners. Think less problem!

Don't confuse YOUR use of FM with other's use of FM. I, for one, listen to public radio ALL DAY at work. It would be wonderful if I had the ability to do so when running, walking, or otherwise not at a radio/computer. The proportion of my audio listening is probably 70% FM and 30% music.

And yes, give AM functionality as well. I wouldn't use it, but I'm not so arrogant to think it's worthless.

And while we're on the subject, gapless would be a great addition. Maybe of the CDs I enjoy have tracks that run together, and it's a shame how the flow is disrupted. It actually hijacks the artistry of many great albums.

The difference being the things I'm talking about are already offered by the competition and have to do with the iPod's primary function, namely listening to audio content the way we want.

1. Gapless for live performances without annoying gaps. 2. 40 Gig is the sweet spot for me...why not Apple? 3. AM/FM should be a thin add-on, and I want both and I'll pay $30. So that is still a good third party market ... where are they? I don't need 125 different ways to connect my iPod to my car radio. 4. A better mic for lectures solution. I like the look of the Belkin 3.5mm plugin adaptor, but it is over $30 already w/o the directional mic. Can anyone give me a good solution that they use in the classroom?

The iPod's NOT about listening to music the way we want it. It's about a decent interface, decent communication with your music files on your PC, and a stylish case. Oh, and profit.

Gapless playback is also needed when you're listening to a live recorded concert album. Even a split second gap is annoying.

I usually agree with you Tetsudo but not this time. In the Southern California area there are at least three top notch public radio/NPR affiliate stations (KCRW, KPCC, KUSC).

Gapless playback would be a nice feature too. Great when I listen to opera and classical music.

If you rip your own cd's, use the "Join Tracks" feature in iTunes. Just pop in your CD, highlight the tracks that you want played back gapless, select "Joint Tracks" from the advanced menu, then click import. The selected tracks will then be ripped as a single track.

So tell me, what good is that for the rest of the world? The world does not revolve around California.

True. And we're all the better for that. But it does stand as an example that what might be good for one place might be good for others. I wish we had good FM radio where I live. One fair NPR station and a lot of mediocre pap. And the AM here is worse.

It's my opinion that Steve Jobs doesn't want to include radio on iPods for a simple reason: No static. He hates excess noise (see the original Mac, the G4 Cube and the iMac), and radio tuning, especially with no external antenna (which an iPod wouldn't have), can be difficult to do without encountering a lot of static. Steve doesn't want static coming out of those pretty white earbuds. Neither do I. Maybe in the future when digital FM has greater penetration, Apple may add that.

I'm fine without it on my iPod. I have a small, decent quality radio that I can carry if I need to.

See, the issue at hand is not to "join tracks", but rather to listen without the gap. We would still want to be able to choose any individual song. iTunes already does this, and in fact can crossfade if so desired - I don't want crossfade on an iPod, but butting the ends of the songs right up next to each other wouldn't hurt.

Gimeeeeee Bluetooth... and a small BT receiver with RCA/mini jack to hook up to my hifi. Go iPod mini BT and iMic BT!!!!!

I can see it for the classical, but for a live recording, who cares if there's a gap in crowd noise? It's noticeable, but not annoying.

I know audiobooks have bookmarks, but can you bookmark songs? (only have a shuffle, so I don't know) If so, that can get around your join tracks problem.

The fact that there is currently no 40GB model looks suspiciously like there is soon to be an updated iPod coming out. I don't want to start any rumors but Apple doesn't usually leave a gap in the lineup like this. A 40GB iPod with some fancy new add-ons would fit nicely in the (currently empty) $500 price point.
