iPod sales Q3
[updated] PiperJaffray expects Apple to for iPod sales of 5.5 million units in the fiscal third quarter ending in June. Banc of America said, "The Street is generally aware that Apple will likely not show significant upside" from the previous quarter, in which it sold 5.3 million units. However, the firm said it expects the iPod business will reaccelerate into the seasonally strong September and December quarters. When it comes to Macintosh sales, "we expect iPod to continue to be a foundation for growth in other parts of Apple's business, and we expect that by the end of calendar 2005 more than 35 million iPods will have shipped, providing Apple with a greater scope of awareness for various products." NPD data shows that Apple gained 2% in U.S. retail market share in the month of May, PiperJaffray noted. [update: Forbes first attributed the report to Banc of America, but later changed its article to credit research firm PiperJaffray.]

What's that?

I hope that is accurate... as in they gained and additional 2% market share to their existing market share... or even lesser but still good... gained market share in the sense of going from 1.5% to 2.0%, but I hope it is the addition of a 2% market share and not just up to that number...
Apple is on the verge of crossing a threshold into a brave new world of potentially much increasing market share in the US and worldwide. Lets hope this much balloooied common thought comes true in the short and long term future.

Only meeting consensus estimates on sales? That's bad news if I've ever heard it.

Uh, that is on iPod sales during "summer" months which is the "slow" season for electronic sales.
They "gained" 2% marketshared for their "macs" which have a much higher price tag and margin than iPods.
Way to spin the negative testudo.

(US retail marketshare is different from the more generic/misused term "marketshare" -- Apple traditionally sits at about 4-5% US retail marketshare)

The article isn't well written; it's ambiguous whether the 2% increase cited refers to Macs or iPods. In re-reading it a number of times, i believe what they're trying to say is that iPod sales increased 2% over the month before.
