Henrico iBooks
With Henrico's schools shifting to Dells, iBooks are becoming available for a low price. The schools are getting a new fleet of Dell laptops for high school students and teachers next year, so the county is looking to . As plans stand, this year's seniors will get first dibs on scooping up one of the machines for $50 each. School officials now are polling high schools to estimate how many seniors would be interested in buying an iBook. The county will buy about 22,000 machines for $1 a piece at the end of its lease with Apple this summer. The school system had the option to return them to Apple. "I hope they found them to be good pieces of equipment, and they are going to get some good use out of them going forward," said Dave Myers, assistant superintendent for finance.

Do they know?

I wonder if the school board knows how much bad press this is causing them?

That board of administrators are the biggest idiots on the face of this planet. 22,000 new Dells -- with viruses, pop-up ads, spyware, lack of security, lack of stability, no iLife, etc. etc. What a BUNCH OF MORONS! Henrico County -- you guys are IDIOTS!

will still have the iBooks. So the younger kids will have better computers :) That's actually good. The school district will be able to see the difference in support requirements for the Apples versus the Dells.
I'll buy one of those iBooks for 50 bucks. I'll bet some of the high schoolers will buy the $50 iBook and NOT use the Dell they are provided for free.

This will come out alright. They'll get their cheap POS Dells and after dealing with the hassle of viruses, spyware, security issues and tons of hardware failures, they'll know what a mistake they made.
In three years or so, they'll be selling off their Dells for a buck a pop and they'll go back to Apple. After the experience, they'll never switch to Dell again.
Apple will always win these battles in the long term. They just offer a superior product and that will ultimately sell.

"don't worry"...I'd like to believe that. But 90 miles away the Montgomery County Maryland school system made the same bone-headed decision two years ago. They still haven't yet realized the errors in their ways.

often, the people who influence decisions like this are the IT departments, who grow larger if more support is needed. They're not going to say, wait a minute, we are getting too many people and too much budget.

Bet your bottom dollar that Dell are using Apples switch to Intel as leverage in winning back these educational accounts. "We have always been Intel..."

The answer is an obvious no. Mentions on Mac enthusiast sites do not really mean jack. So why do you bother asking it.
"That board of administrators are the biggest idiots on the face of this planet."
Let's not exaggerate, shall we? Why some Mac users hyper-distort is beyond me.

Capable administration can easily lock the PC laptop down. Please don't make it out like it's a life or death situation. In addition, iLife is good and all but it is not like it's the be-all-end-all. iTunes is available on PC. Picasa is an excellent alternative to iPhoto. Plus, what does school students need with iLife anyway.

I hope so too bit I am not a zealous preacher. I mean, how long have you been saying that, 2001, 2002, 2003?
