Jobs previews iTunes 4.9

During his speech at the "D3: All Things Digital" conference, Apple CEO Steve Jobs , an upcoming revision to the music player for Mac and Windows. Jobs said the new version would incorporate support for Podcasts, the popular pre-recorded audio broadcasting concept. The software will be released within the next 60 days, according to Jobs. Apple will only offer free Podcasts through iTunes. The final version of iTunes 4.9 will also display relevant album art during Podcasts, providing users with purchase links to the iTunes Music Store. Apple will also offer a tool for content creators to upload their content to the iTunes Music Store. When asked if Apple would sell movies via an iTunes-like store for video, Jobs said Apple's "actions of the future" would answer that question.

    This is great news

Podcasts definitely fall in the "Think Different" agenda of Apple. This is great news for those podcasters who want to expand their audience and podcast listeners who can have all their audio come from a single source.

Can't wait to see how this update will look!

    However

However, if Apple controls which podcast I have access to, or if the podcast that iTunes process has DMR on it, then I will stick with iPodderX.

If Apple can filter which books they have in their stores, they might filter which podcast I can download via iTunes.

    Agreed...

However, DeepDish, what type of content are you talking about? Can't you still get that *elsewhere*?

Even if i can't buy (for example) "The History of p***" from the audio books section, doesn't mean that Apple is bad by not offering it.

I don't firmly believe that censorship is entirely the issue. Even if Apple's iTunes store offered as much as Amazon, they still wouldn't have everything, right?

Perhaps even a deal hasn't been struck between the creator/distributor and Apple to offer the item.

You've got a valid point, DeepDish, and I am sure that I value freedom of press, etc. as much as you. However, I don't believe there to be a particular conspiracy surrounding iTunes lemonade stand just yet. And even if there were, that it was Apple's fault at all at this point. If there is, submit the story to /..

Apple has every right to decided what goes through there system.

But, I want one software package to handle all of my podcast. If Apple does filter, then I am forced to use two podcast software packages.

Might as well just use iPodderX to get everything if Apple is going to filter. Even though Apple would probably do it cooler and better than iPodderX, I don't want to have some done here and some done there if Apple controls which podcast rss feeds they will allow.

    iTunes interface

They could at least clean up the interface or is that for iTunes 5? I don't see a purpose for the eject button anymore[not on the sidebar] and the brushed metal needs a revamp like the one they have in Dashboard. I don't know about the controller though, it would look odd in iTunes ya know?

    iTunes 5

    Can anyone say video?

They need to justify the full version upgrade.

    iTunes 5

I hope iT 5 will introduce iTunes home server. To allow me to access my songs from anywhere in my house and regardless of which computer I play the song from it updates my playcount. My sister can have her username and her own playcount. If the server is set up on my iMac and I'm on my powerbook I could have the choice of playing the song on my powerbook (as I do now) or playing it on my imac (so it can be pumped thru my airport express (the pb becomes the remote).

    I wonder

I wonder what user rights 4.9 will take away this time. :(
