Sony HDR-HC1 Handycam
[site not updated] today announced what it calls the world's smallest and lightest high definition consumer camcorder. The ultra-compact HDR-HC1 Handycam camcorder, which "fits comfortably in your hand," weighs only about 1-1/2 pounds, and packs a Carl Zeiss Vario-Sonnar lens. It features full HD resolution based on HDV 1080i. The sub-$2000 camcorder also captures 2.8-megapixel digital still images, which can be stored directly on Memory Stick PRO Duo media for transfer to PCs and other devices. According to Sony, it is the only HD video camera that allows users to record high-definition video and take a 1-megapixel digital still image at the same time. For quick framing and easy image sharing, the camcorder has a 2.7-inch wide hybrid, touch-panel LCD screen to access menu options. Users can switch between 16:9 and 4:3 aspect ratios.
The HDR-HC1 offers a full complement of manual controls, including a 10X optical and 120X digital zoom, zoom ring, zebra pattern, and spot focus. White balance, shutter speed and focus can all be adjusted manually.
The Cinematic mode allows users to record video with a film-like appearance, while the Shot Transition feature allows users to create "interesting cinematic effects."
Sony's Super NightShot Plus Infrared System allows users to record high definition video in total darkness. Sony's night vision system "adds the greatest amount of range and detail to your images in low- to no-light conditions.

A 1 chip "HD" camera. come on. Who is sony trying to fool? Just because they stamp the letters HD on the thing, doesn't mean it is.

It is HD if it captures and outputs 1080i. I think this looks like a great way to start getting HD Camcorders to the masses. You can't give everyone 3 chip cameras for $400. Plus it's not CCD it's CMOS. Similar to how a digital SLR uses only one chip not three.

I've seen the output from these camcorders on a 50' HD screen and I can say that the detail is BREATHTAKING. This IS an HD camera.
