Apple releases iTunes 4.8

updated 01:50 pm EDT, Mon May 9, 2005

iTunes 4.8 available

Apple today released , an update to its digital music jukebox software and its client for the iTunes Music Store. Version 4.8 includes new Music Store features, improved video support, security fixes, and support for transferring contacts and calendars from your computer to your iPod (requires Mac OS X version 10.4 on your computer), according to the documentation. Several readers also note that iTunes 4.8 also offers improved support for video, allowing the application to view, store, and manage videos, while a new preference allows users to view/watch video content in either the main window, a separate window, or full screen. [updated 3:45 pm ET]

Apple said that iTunes 4.8 brings a fix for buffer overflow in iTunes could cause a denial of service and lead to execution of arbitrary code. "The MPEG4 file parsing code in iTunes versions prior to 4.8 contains a buffer overflow vulnerability. Parsing a maliciously-crafted MPEG4 file could cause iTunes to terminate or potentially execute arbitrary code. iTunes 4.8 addresses this issue
by improving the validation checks used when loading MPEG4 files."

I think I might hold off.

Apple's site says version 4.6 (New!), and the image I downloaded said 4.7.

    I still wish...

I have given feedback to Apple, posted on the boards @ Apple Support. I wish they'd implement SOME feature that allows me to use checkboxes or whatever so I can tell iTunes I want certain songs to update/not update to my iPod, yet still be playable on my computer. I have songs I don't want on my ipod (like my classical collection) but I would want to listen to through AirExpress or at my desk, and it sucks that I can only use the checkbox to say "I don't want to listen to this track at ALL." Why would I keep a track i don't want to listen to on my computer? For as much as I like iTunes, that lack of user-friendliness sure is frustrating.

    Video support

Interesting... iTunes 4.8 can organize video clips now. I guess upcoming iPod photo may playback video after all.

jmelrose, just create a smart playlist that contains all tracks whose genre is NOT classical. Then set your iPod prefs to automatically sync to that playlist and that playlist only.

    Done.

    Video iPod

Yeah, really, what then "Show video fullscreen" means?

    Full Screen Video

The full screen video just brings iTunes up to par with QuickTime Player... They are making it an alternate place to view videos, and that means moving some features over to make it worthwhile.
