Chicago Sun-Times: Apple shatters Windows with Tiger

Apple shatters Windows

Andy Ihnatko says that Apple has '' in his latest column in the Chicago Sun-Times: "Apple's acting like a bunch of jerks about how much better they are at these things than anybody else. I mean, they're really rubbing Windows' nose in it with this one. Which is hardly sporting, but it's undeniably Good News for users....Clearly, the folks at Microsoft have their work cut out for them. The next edition of Windows won't ship until 2006 -- maybe -- and while the company certainly has the sort of smart and creative talent pool that's required to produce such an OS update as jubilant and successful as Tiger, is that part of the company's nature? Every past edition of Windows emphatically indicates the answer is no."

    But....

What sets us apart is we sit in the back be cool where Billy boy would sit in the front to be a bus drivers pet.

    Absolute Drivel

from a fat schnook with nothing to say. Apple is doing what it always has done, striving to improve its products. "Apple's acting like a bunch of jerks about how much better they are at these things than anybody else...they're really rubbing Windows' nose in it..." Apple is not bragging and they're not rubbing anyone's nose in anything (but if Andy wants to volunteer his, great). The rest of his article is pretty good though.

    Jaguar gets short shrift

Jaguar was a much more "Must Have" than Panther. If my Mac mini didn't ship with Panther, if I had to buy it separately, I wouldn't have bothered ... I *hadn't* bothered up to that point. It's got nice features, but it didn't completely blow away Jaguar the way Jaguar blew away 10.1.

Tiger, now, I keep telling myself to wait for 10.4.1 and the bug fixes, but it's getting harder every day.

Take this with a grain of

salt. Andy use to be a paid evanglizer for Apple Computer, he may not be the least biased opinion on Tiger. Although he is correct about Tiger kicking a**********

    Well, of course

he's an evangelizer. He still makes his living by writing about Macs. That doesn't mean he isn't right! Heck, ANY rational computer professional should be a Mac evangelist.

    Any shillers

Big d*cking deal - what does one expect Andy to say? Any shillers should be dismissed - Ihnatko is no better than Thurott.

    hmmmm

I guess he's trying to be cute again, but this type of talk is usually counteproductive when it comes to platform issues. He'll only succeed in perpetuating the stereotype of Mac users as smug and obnoxious. That stereotype may be mostly true (he personifies it), but I don't like him extending his own smugness to Apple. I don't like him inferring in the slightest that they're acting like arrogant jerks - he thinks it's funny, we might chuckle, but most PC users will take it at face value.
