Bugs, incompatibilities in Tiger affect enterprise

Tiger bugs affect software

Some enterprise software developers have discovered that their and are recommending that their customers hold off on upgrading to Tiger, according to an eWEEK report. Microsoft says a patch for its Virtual PC software is due in 2-3 months, while Thursby says that a bug within the Tiger kernel will need to be repaired before it can issue its fix (due in August) for ADmitMac, which provides Active Directory integration, and DAVE, an SMB file/print-sharing product. "While most developers point to dramatic changes in Tiger's kernel as the reason, several claim that part of the problem is one or more bugs in the kernel of Mac OS X 10.4, bugs that they say Apple has acknowledged and has promised to repair....Incompatibilities with Tiger exist for a large variety of network software, including VPN clients from a variety of vendors," Thursby products, and PGP Desktop.

    bugs?

Maybe I'm just not searching the forums properly, but I'm a little surprised that I'm the only one having the problems I am. I held off installing the 10.3.9 update for a week or so because of all the problems I'd read about, but most people wrote them off as third-party software issues, so I decided to take the chance.

Perhaps by pure coincidence, after installing 10.3.9, Expose only works when it feels like it, launching an app from the Dock or Finder opens the app in the background rather than in the front, Safari doesn't always show the spinning icon on a tab that's loading, the cursor doesn't always change to a hand when mousing over a link in Safari, menu items don't always highlight when mousing over them, and the names of Dock items don't always show up when mousing over them.

I thought maybe upgrading to Tiger would fix these quirks, so I didn't really care much... but it didn't. And on top of all that, after Tiger, Classic no longer works because "Classic was unable to update its files in 'System Folder' on 'Macintosh HD'." And AOL Instant Messenger crashes when I click the "Sign On" button.

I really should know better than to upgrade an OS on a weekday... but I was one of the lucky ones whose Tiger shipment was delayed a day.

And always do a fresh reformat when changing cat names!

It sounds to me like you have some system corruption that upgrading alone will not resolve. Why didn't you backup your system and do a clean install of Tiger?

    yep, a bug

Java Web Start in the utilities folder will not launch after my Tiger upgrade. I get this error:

Uncaught exception in main method: java.lang.StringIndexOutOfBoundsException: String index out of range: 3

Can't run etrade pro now. Now I have to use the pc with the kvm switch. Huff..

    ya

I'm sure microsoft is in a big hurry to update their S***** VPC to work with Tiger, I'm sure they have no interest in taking forever, and then pointing to their software and saying "dont buy tiger!" BY THE WAY, Connectix VPC works perfect in Tiger still, if you have a G4 to run it on. So I guess that means MS sabotaged their own software on purpose. Which is why I never "downgraded" from the Connectix version to the MS version.

    re: bugs?

I did do a backup before I installed, and I've now restored my hard drive to that disk image until I have time to s**** around with a full reformat. I've also discovered that the quirks seem to be related to a mouse issue, but I haven't quite pinned it down yet (still odd that it happened exactly upon installing 10.3.9 though).

I doubt the mouse problem is what caused Classic and AIM not to work in Tiger, though... hopefully a fresh reformat will fix that. I don't know if it's because I bought a refurb'd PowerBook, but I'm getting rather accustomed to reformatting every 4 months because of "quirks".
