    Java issues

if you are having java issues after upgrading to 10.3.9. In the terminal issue this command:

    sudo update_prebinding -root / -force

It will run for about 5 minutes. This has worked on every machine that was previously having Java issues.

    Re: Java issues

Tried it. All it did was: a) keep safari from launching altogether (it bounces many times, then just stops) b) keeps anything else from running c) hangs my computer on shutdown d) force reboot and fsck finds lots of problems with tmp files e) logging back in and running safari, java still causes it to crash.

So, I'm not sure how many people this has worked for, but it didn't for me. After work I'm going to try the "re-install security patch 2" option.

Of course, it sure would be nice if a) Apple didn't release crappy updates EVERY TIME so people didn't have these kinds of issues. Every update these days seems to break one thing or another grossly. b) Apple actually offered a solution (or, if they did, MacNN put up a link to the info) rather than just saying "Hey, guess what! We confirm we've screwed up your computer! Aren't we great for being so forthright about our mistake!"

Don't know why MacNN didn't have a link in their original story.

    Its no big issue

The Java/Safari issue happened on my iBook. But it seems to be limited to just Safari. The only real problem I encountered was that Safari did not load at all after the install, but recently I have been using Firefox. The problem was that the default browser setting is done from Safari. The work around for this was to re-install Safari from the lastest download from the Apple website. This allowed me to change the browser, although Safari remained unstable. Please Apple move the default browser setting to the system menu. If Windows has made the browser part of the system the least you can do is make it easy to change from the system and not force people to use Safari.

    I'm still waiting for...

    - basic cookie 'ask' overide control (check your cookies & be amazed) - ability to set cache to zero (no accumulation) - ability to have zero history footprint (no session accumulation) - ability to allow pop-ups on an 'ask' basis - ability to set user agent pref for some websites requiring IE - ability to set an alt default browser without having safari installed

In a world of web spying Safari appears to be very trackable - I would at least suspect Apple wants to know where you have been, otherwise it would make sense this privacy would be available - Mozilla seems a much better browser in this regard...

    Problems here too

Save for Firefox and iTunes, none of my apps would run. At first it was just Mail and Safari until I did a reboot and all h*** broke loose after that. I get that annoying beach ball whenever I try to start opening an application. I tried re-running the 10.3.9 Combo Update but Installer wouldn't even run!

I'm just holding off until Tiger comes out to do a Clean Install because at this point, it doesn't make sense to go back to Panther.

    Love 'Em!

Gotta love Mac users, 9 cracks at making a solid OS, probably the last crack in 10.3.9, and one with trouble with it is going to go for the next paid for version that is being "hailed" at early to ship.

FYI, just under 2 weeks to ship 10.4 and already they have announced apps which require 10.4.1... does this give you a clue?

    Love 'Em Too!

Gotta love Windows users, 9000 cracks at making a solid OS, probably the last crack in Service Pack XP2J7C9D-4.83, and Microsoft is going to spend over $200 million to re-introduce tired 3-year old XP since (as usual) their next crack an OS is several years behind schedule.

FYI, Microsoft still doesn't have the complete list of bugs finalized that they are planning to include with Longshot and hence they can't begin to guess at a firm ship date ... does this give you a clue?

    Longshot...

...I remember the day I bought 10.1 off eBay & thought to myself 'am I crazy? I have just been enjoying several months of everything working on OS-9'...?

While I enjoy many features of OS-X, I'm still waiting for Java compatability with my real estate MLS site & have owned & quite fully learned XP because of it...

I would also say XP has its merits & I've been running 24/7 with it for 2 yrs without a virus or 'meltdown'...

    Love 'Em

I may encounter problems with OS X but it's a far cry from what I have to deal with if I were on Windows. I would hate to be nervous everytime I open an email attachment. Or to spend time and money scanning for viruses, spyware or malware just to keep my sanity.

Nobody said OS X was perfect but at least Apple is trying. Microsoft, on the other hand, does not have the incentive to do so. They've got 90%+ of the market cornered after all.

Oh yeah, I heard you guys are getting Spotlight too. =D
