Panther Safari gets boost

Last week's present in Mac OS X Tiger's Safari release, including new standards support, new WebKit capabilites, site compatibility fixes and performance optimizations. "Safari 1.3 loads pages overall 35% faster than 1.2 as measured by IBench. In addition to improving the overall page load, Safari 1.3 will display content sooner than 1.2 did, so that subresources don't hold up the initial display of the page." Other performance improvements include an improved JavaScript engine, HTML editing, better compatibility and security, better DOM Level 2 support, XSLT support, and a new Objective-C WebKit plugin API as well as enhancements to the Netscape Plugin API.

    Google Maps broke

Most of Google Maps still works with Safari 1.3, but there are some bugs now. Guess the Safari Javascript engine got tweaked a lot.

    Screws up Java in Safari?

Seems the 10.3.9 update makes a bit of a mess of running Java applets in Safari. I'd updated my home machines, but not my PowerBook I use for the office, only to see this morning a note from Ephox (the folks that make the WYSIWYG editor we use for our CMS) that indicates that the Java applet has some issues after the update. From Ephox --

"The Mac OS X 10.3.9 update which was released over the weekend April 16/17, 2005 is causing problems for a number of people where Java crashes. This problem is not specific to EditLive! for Java but does result in Safari crashing when EditLive! for Java is loaded.

The key symptoms of this problem are:

Mac OS X upgraded to 10.3.9.

Safari crashes when first loading EditLive! for Java (the EditLive! for Java interface is never shown and a debug log would probably be pretty much empty).

This is not a problem with EditLive! for Java but rather a problem caused by the 10.3.9 update which completely breaks Java. The problem does not occur on all computers which upgrade to 10.3.9 but has been widely reported.

At this stage the best work around appears to be manually reinstalling the 2005-002 Security Update which is available from http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/securityupdate2005002macosx1034orlater.html.  However it important to note that Apple have not issued any statement regarding this problem and this solution may cause other unintended side effects."

May be some trouble ahead if this proves to be as big as it sounds.

    No Safari Prairiefire

The best internet utility in the world, Safari Prairiefire, does not work any longer :(

Is there a workaround (I don't want to downgrade Safari)?

    For more information...

There's a long discussion of the problems people have found with Safari 1.3 (and, in some cases, workarounds) on Dave Hyatt's blog,

    http://weblogs.mozillazine.org/hyatt/archives/2005_04.html#007962

(Dave Hyatt is the main developer for Safari.) A big issue seems to be that the way resources are cached is now overly aggressive, preventing a number of sites from working that require repeated downloads of a changing resource.

    Java NOT broken by 10.3.9

The Java "problem" is caused by hosed Java installations preceding thhis update and is fixed by re-installing the 2005-002 security update. None of the Mac users in my circle had any problem with Safari 1.3 and Java. None of the critics ever explain why only some people have trouble and most do not. The disinformation spread on sites like this is contemptible.

    new Favorites?

Hmm.. Did this update autoload some new favorites on anyone's Safari favorites list? Amazon, etc... It did for me-

    disinformation

"The disinformation spread on sites like this is contemptible."

    Amen, brother.

All too often people jump to wild (and often erroneous) conclusions based on just a few incidents. This "the sky is falling" attitude often leads to wasted effort on the part of support staff trying to track down a problem that actually affects very few users.

I've upgraded ~60 Macs to 10.3.9 over the weekend, and not a single one has had any problems related to Safari or Java. Of course, 3 or 4 people reporting problems after the update means that problem is "widespread"....ugh.

    Two more happy fellows...

...in a world where ignorance is bliss.

10.3.9 most definitely causes issues with some Java applets in Safari. After upgrading my PowerBook running 10.3.8 with a fully functional Java implementation to 10.3.9, the Ephox EditLive! for Java applet does in fact now crash Safari. It is a situation that is remedied only by reinstallling Security Update 2005-002.

So, even ignoring the sanctimonious drivel based on your insular little packets of experience, you're both still wrong.

Since the "fix" of reinstalling 2005-002 reinstalls Java Web Start and related components, it is more than reasonable to conclude that 10.3.9 definitely affects the execution of Java applets in Safari. It is also reasonable to conclude that reinstalling 2005-002 may have unforeseen consequences with respect to Java stability and security in Web applets.

The scope and extent of this matter is certainly unclear, but I'm sure it will come to light in short order.

I am not jumping to 10.4

They did not test it with tools (popular), naming iGetter at first place. Mozilla "virus" hit Apple QA department? I mean, people like "hah, lame to use a download manager" are in QA department?

Java Webstart is also used by us, non geeks (!) here, no I don't feel like uncompressing a lame zip archive etc to try software.

Be careful mr. Hyatt, you know my concerns and why I don't touch anything with mozilla in its name.
