    Anyone Surprised?

Really, after the announcement at CES with MS at Tivo's side announcing some great partnership (http://seattlepi.nwsource.com/business/206733_msftgates06.html) this should be no surprise.

Does anyone know any good options for a mac user seriously considering dumping his Tivo?

    What does this mean?

Is this their way of backing away from developing TiVo-to-Go for Mac or does this just mean that there won't be any Apple/TiVo merger?

    Huh?

After installing vserver on my DTivo (SD-DVR40) and adding a couple of plugins to VLC, I can watch anything (including live TV) on my Mac. So, how much does it cost to roll open-source apps out to Tivo and Mac users? Maybe this guy doesn't like the idea of me saving TY files to my desktop.

    Meh...

... Oh well. I'm pretty close to ditching my Tivo anyway because it's so slooooow from the last update, and I'm looking to get HDTV and will probably get the Time Warner HD DVR.

It'll be just as non-interoperable, but it'll cost less per month and be able to record HD.

Of course, if Apple or elgato were to build a CableCARD adapter for Macs along with good DVR software....

    Re: Huh?

TivoToGo uses .tivo files which have been have some sort of DRM on them that, at the moment, needs a windows machine to decrypt. I don't know if the .tivo format was always used on unhacked series 2s or if it was added after the 7.x software update that started getting pushed to Tivos in January.

Anyway, I don't think he is saying that he has a problem with you copying .ty to your computer ( although he may have a problem with that ). He is saying that he has a problem with allocation his resources to let help you copy and view .tivo files on your mac :(

Thanks for the links though, good to know that hacking might be an option. I'll have to look into that.

    Re: Re: Huh?

Yeah. That's the problem. From what I've read, I don't believe SA s2 Tivo Ty files are or ever were encrypted. I think TivoToGo encrypts Ty files on the Tivo before serving .tivo files to the Windows client. Tivo just doesn't want to spend the money for a Mac client.

But, they could put any DRM on the server (tivo) side, including ones from Apple or Real. Or, you could put your own server on your Tivo.

BTW, DirecTV s2 Tivo Ty files have always been encrypted (RID) until you hack the box. That's because the s2 DTivos record digital mpeg right off the satellite whereas SA s2 Tivos receive analog and encode mpeg files. I've heard the new HDTV Tivos now also use RID for the same reason.

    don't do tivo

6 months ago I did a survery on the whole DVR thing... and concluded that tivo was NOT the way to go. I went with the time warner/scientific atlanta option and quite honestly it has worked out like a total champ for me. I've had none of the issues that I see some people having.

    So what does this mean?

If I was considering buying a TIVO, don't have cable so can't use their DVR options, what does this mean? Can I buy an older (cheaper) TIVO because media features in newer ones won't work for me as a Mac owner anyway? I've never heard anything negative about TIVO until I looked at the comments here (and, of course, I'm not thrilled about them dis'ing Macs either!), so maybe someone can help me figure this out?

"DAMN! That's some of the worst new I've heard in quite a while"

I agree. People stop bashing Tivo because it won't work with Mac. It's the best thing out there and Tivo and Apple have a lot in common. In some ways Tivo looks out for the customer more than Apple does. Apple sometimes looks more like a cooporation (it is but you get my piont) It's just to bad that they can't work together.

I wonder how much of this has to do with Jobs. Tivo is a linux box. How hard can it be. Still waiting for AAC on the Tivo and that's not Tivo's fault.
