Macs "getting more consideration" than before

Consumers considering Macs

"Because they are beautifully designed and so far haven't attracted viruses or spyware, Apple Computer's Macintosh models are from Windows users," says Walter Mossberg writing for The Wall Street Journal. "You can now buy a full-fledged, decently equipped Mac, called the Mac Mini, for just $499 ... Apple's iMac G5 models, starting at $1,299, are an even better choice. They use a powerful processor called the G5, and they have a brilliant built-in flat-panel screen. The Mac does everything a typical user needs at least as well as a Windows computer, and it's about to get a major new upgrade of its operating system, which already bests Windows in some respects ... But switching to the Mac isn't right for every user, and it requires buyers to master new software, some of which must be bought separately. Plus, the cheapest Windows PCs still cost less."

Well, Faizon318, do you want to tell us why you think so? Sounds pretty reasonable to me.

    Good article

Walter Mossberg is typically a very level-headed, down-to-earth, unbiased technology columnist. Over the years he's given Apple tons of excellent major-publication (Wall Street Journal) positive exposure. This article seems no different to me.

    well...

he does seem to be dumbing it down a bit... and not being 100% accurate... but he seems to be right overall

    Know the readers

Walt Mossber is very in step with technology.

However, you really have to be a Wall Street Journal reader to understand Walt's limitation. He is given only a single column in the Marketplace section every Thursday.

This weeks article looked at the PC buying process, and purchasing a Mac was thrown in as an great option. Walt is going out of his way to continually toss in Apple's name, something he should be commended for.

Also, Mac users need to appreciate the fact that most people know nothing about Macs. Concepts that seem obvious, or can be better explained, need to be dumb down for the sake of illustrating a larger issue.

    Some good points than...

"and it requires buyers to master new software, some of which must be bought separately."

Thats right because most windows users don't buy their software they steal it! How many house hold users out that actually own their own copy of Microsoft Office or Windows for that matter.

bleee, I think a majority of house hold users own a legal copy of Windows, since it's hard to buy a computer without one...

Don't be too quick to accuse Windows users of being pirates though, I think just as many Mac users are pirates (maybe more). It's even easier to pirate Mac software, copy protection seems more widely used on the Windows side than on the Mac...

    Windows users do pirate

Well, many people I know that bought their computers with Windows 98 or ME have upgraded illegally to Windows 2000 professional or Windows XP professional. Microsoft charges extra for the professional version!

Poole said that 92 percent of software in China is pirated, which means the software on 13 million computers. And though the rate is estimated at only 22 percent in the United States, that still amounts to 12 million PCs, because the computer market stateside is so much larger.
