Podcasts gain popularity

The Internet audio broadcasts known as are catching on with owners of iPods and other digital-music players, a new survey finds. Twenty-nine percent of U.S. adults who own MP3 players like Apple's iPod say they have downloaded podcasts from the Internet, according to the study released Sunday. That means more than six million people are listening to a form of communication that emerged only last year, according to the research. Podcasters create radio-like programs of commentary, music or humor, which are saved in MP3 audio format and posted online. Listeners can be automatically notified when a new podcast is available by special software.

    Wanna make big bucks?

It's good to see podcasting start catching fire, although it it relatively easy to get started with your own podcast, there is not a suite of apps or a single solution that will help you get started. Everyone's got their own ways of getting to Rome but no one's created a nice paved path.

So you wanna make big bucks? The gauntlet has been thrown down before you. I've got my cash ready.

    Not So Sure

This seems to be an extreme claim (6 *million*?), and, indeed, when you investigate the survey further you find they're extrapolating this 6 million number on a sample of 208 people!!!!!!! Now that's what you might call statistical manipulation. And how exactly did they select which particular media owners to call, how did they obtain their resource list and what are the demographics of the participants? I'm highly suspicious of the research and subsequent conclusions of this study.

    Ummm...

I purchased an iPod and thought this would be cool, but there isn't many nice software solutions to get the music from the internet on to your iPod with ease.

Perhaps if it were built in to iTunes more people would take it seriously.

Well, podcasts aren't songs on the Inkernet but more like radio talk shows. Use iPodder (available at http://www.ipodder.org/directory/4/ipodderSoftware)to automatically download new shows and load it on you iPod (it works seamlessly through iTunes).

The Dawn and Drew show rocks!

    Manic Mondays

I do a comedy podcast every Monday morning called Manic Mondays. It features funny songs and other bits like News Of The Stupid, Horrible Movie Reviews, and Impossible Interviews.

    Do give it a listen:

Here's an interesting article on podcasting in last month's issue of Wired:
