Microsoft advises against iPod shuffle?

Microsoft's "PlayForSure" has published "six tips for ." The checklist, which offers advice that appears to be geared against iPod's shuffle, advises users to "make sure you're getting all the goodies" -- voice recording, FM recording, and a stopwatch. The report also says "you'll want a display ... this is critical if you want to find that one song or artist you really want to hear." The list emphasizes FM radio: "let a professional make your next playlist ... having an FM radio lets you put your player on autopilot." On the topic of music purchasing, PlayForSure says "don't get locked into one online store ...Having the flexibility to choose from over 1 million tracks of music from multiple online music stores such as MSN Music, Napster, MusicMatch, and Wal-Mart can be the key to getting the music you want."

Losers

I saw this a few weeks ago. Microsofties are such losers.

Tips for buying a PC:

1. Make sure it has all the goodies built in: firewire, Ethernet, Bluetooth, WiFi. You don't want to be stuck without the extras!
2. You don't want to be locked down with one, poorly designed OS. Make sure you support choice and choose one that offers a more secure alternative.

...your playlists - ha ha ha! That's comedy gold right there.

But wait, if I'm too stupid to make my own playlists and should rely on the radio, why don't I just go out and buy a radio?

Or look at it the other way, if I need a screen to find that one song or artists that I need to listen to, then why would I want a radio?

Let the "professionals" decide what you should buy. Let the "professionals" decide what you should listen. This is like buying a car that tells where you should go. People buy MP3 players to get away from the stupid FM commercials (excluding NPR).

FM...

I still want FM capabilities in the iPod and iPod Shuffle. Not for the reason Microsoft said, but because I enjoy listening to NPR for much of the day. Not including FM forces me to buy a separate Sony product just for the radio.

not sure what the above user was saying, but the Mac platform only runs MacOS, whereas PCs give you the choice of Windows, UNIX or LINUX... much more choice than the mac... especially sinc eyou can no longer start up in Mac OS 9.

or can you use LINUX on the mac now???

That's hilarious

I love how the vital need for FM radio--which requires special headphones that act as the antenna, and get poor reception, is essentially TWO of the six reasons Microsoft gives for not using an iPod :D (As if my life doesn't already have an FM radio every single place I go... one that DOES get good reception because it has a real antenna.)

As well as Windows (via VirtualPC or GuestPC), although I'm not sure why anyone in their right mind would want to. Not to mention Mac OS X *IS* a flavour of Unix and can run most Unix software.

Radio and stopwatch

You NEED a stopwatch to know how long you've been listening to your flash-based player. Its the 'uptime' for the MP3 crowd, dudez.

As for their radio argument, I'd go along with it except for the fact that I think radio stations generally are programmed by chimps back at the parent corporation's office (this way, they get all the kick-back money, as opposed to the local stations - to buy more bananas or something I guess). So, I'd like to have a pro do my radio, but there are none (now, if those subscription services actually hired pros to come up with decent playlists put together with thought, as opposed to just "well, let's randomly take 400 songs with a genre of 'latin disco', that you could just download and play, now that would be fine, except it wouldn't require me to need an FM player).

Oh, did they mention to make sure you get a player that locks you into the windows platform so you can have choice on all things but your OS?

iPod Overdue Radio option

Greetings:

The FM option is a sensible basic feature beyond opinion. As a former Circuit City Westbury assist manager (initially the sole Apple rep on Long Island there), and our customers, have been using Aiwa CR-LD "cigarette lighter" FM/AM radios close to ten years, pining for an American brand equivalent (and why that model and its clones have always sold well). That iPods weren't even considered for radio tuner options was a great oversight that can easily still bite Apple. Least we forget how cocky SONY was about the technical superiority of Betamax, the customer is moved more by features than benchmark specs. I hope Jobs can swallow his pride and listen to the customers for once and throw a FM (better, AM/FM) tuner into an iPod because sure as the sun rises someone will grab that niche and woe to he too vain to heed advice.

Oh, and don't subscriptions basically lock you into one store? I mean, you can't use a subscription on Napster to then get music from Real, can you? And no one's stupid enough to pay for multiple subscriptions (well, OK, maybe people who use windows are stupid enough...)

Uhm.. the only thing Macs cannot run is Windows. Well VPC would have been great if MS had not purchased the company, now it will slowly go into the crapper. I used version 7.0 for a short time, and my computer was hacked... DELETE THIS THING CALLED WINDOWS.

Yeah or you could run FreeBSD, NetBSD, OpenBSD, a variety of Linux distributions natively, or, just about any x86-based operating system using VirtualPC. A while back someone went about to see how many OSes he could run on his PowerBook, the answer was something like 30. Several of these were far from mainstream, but you get my point.

I like to listen to two different college radio stations around here. One plays jazz from 7-10AM and 3-6PM. The other plays underground funk Mon 6:30-8:30PM and electronica of all types from 6:30-10:30PM on Wednesday evenings. These stations are commercial free except for occasional break-ins by the DJs to do the FCC mandated call letters between 3 minutes of and 3 minutes after the hour and the occasional "You're listening to...". Other than that it's just constant tuneage.

It's also stuff I don't mind listening to that I probably wouldn't pay to own. These kind of stations I would like to listen to on my iPod, not the ClearChannel playlist of doom. Hopefully Apple will add some new features like an FM tuner to the iPod as I'm not about to upgrade from my 2G 20GB iPod just for more storage or for the iPod photo functionality.

If I read the article repeditively, I will actually start to believe that Mr. Gates makes a better alternative to the iPod shuffle. Comrade, let's just obey him and stop looking for the best choice for each individual. At this point, Apple seems to have a pretty well thought out line up.

Get Entourage to work correctly with an exchange server to the same extent as Outlook 2001.

Gets webcam support for MSN

among many other severe short falls in the microsoft line-up

then perhaps microsoft can say something about other companies. However this is a clear deperation move to prevent people move to the mac away from windows and its player.

FM and iPod?

The iPod really should have an FM tuner built-in or at least as an option. There are times when I don't only want to hear what I've archived.

As for NPR, it can be good, it used to be great, and yes, I'll agree that there is too much corporate influence on it. Market Watch and other pro business programs are on multiple times per day but where is the labor programming? Minnesota Public Radio is especially pro corporate big business. That's why I listen to local community radio. And if I could listen on an iPod then I'd break open the wallet and finally buy one.

A stopwatch. A freaking stopwatch???? Why am I surprised though. This coming from the company that wants to throw everything AND the kitchen sink into their OS.

Damnit, I want my next flash MP3 player to be built on top of a Swiss Army knife, and it should have a color screen so I can watch DVDs, and it should get TV and have satelite hookups, have a lighter and a flashlight, a portable iron, needs to play Playstation games, and do my taxes.

Yeah, I want a "do a dozen things in a half-baked manner" device. Heck I've already got one of those, called a cellphone. Don't need another one that is like that.

However, I do think a radio might be kinda nice add on. But a stopwatch???? Give me a break.

If I'm going to use an MP3 player it is to play my songs and not time the car races or listen to the radio replay 10 songs over and over again. The Mac can run linux,unix, and OSX plus OS9 in classic mode. The iPod shuffle is for those who want to put only there favorite songs on the player and let the iPod shuffle determine what order they play in. It's as simple as that. You want more features you have your choice of the iPod Mini or the regular iPods. The Shuffle is also about price for those who can't afford one of the more expensive players or for those who don't have a massive MP3 collection. Obviously Microshaft doesn't get what market the shuffle is for along with all the other dumb PC user posters here. Know your facts before you write dumb things.

FM is obsolete technology and is being replaced (at least) in Europe by DAB digital radio.

Apple is not so stupid that it's going to start adding technology to the iPod that varies in usability/popularity/availability from country to country...

You only need radio if you haven't learned how to set up downloading podcasted programming. Unless it's necessary for live news or sports, you can listen to "radio" of virtually every flavor and point of view.

And to echo the earlier comments, a stopwatch?! Doesn't anyone edit this stuff before it gets sent out? Microsoft really needs someone to do a company-wide workshop on the concept of "feature creep."

I know that KCRW is streaming the programs they produce, but I haven't heard of a way of streaming the main NPR programs (Morning Edition, Day to Day, All Things Considered, etc.). Can those be Postcast as well?

Finally, just what I've been waiting for... the anti-FM poster who always shows up after numerous people express their desire for FM functionality on iPods.

Before, it was "nobody wants FM on an iPod", but I guess the 10 or so requests in just this thread threw that argument out the door. Personally, I want AM on my iPod.

I think Apple is holding back this functionality (which is already present on Shuffle chips, but crippled by Apple) is because Apple makes no money from radio content.

It's not just the iPod that Apple is selling you. They also structure the entire iTunes/iPod experience to be closed to the point that you can only buy content online through Apple.

Think Pez. I don't recall seeing any other candies that could fit into a Pez dispenser. To have the thing work, you had to buy Pez candy

Apple would much rather wait for satellite receivers to become small enough to integrate into the iPod, then demand that XM or Sirius or whoever give Apple a solid cut of the subscription base.

Radio, not Podcasts

Live local radio is broadcast via radio waves. You don't need a computer or internet access to listen. Not everywhere can you be always online. When I'm at work I often want to listen to live radio, not archived podcasts. Talk of the Nation, local talk, local music shows on community radio, and local news. So I use a years old Walkman. I can listen to Radio K on AM radio as well. But why shouldn't I just carry one device instead of two, assuming I buy an iPod for MP3/AAC tunes. Sometimes I want to listen to radio, and by "radio" I mean local, broadcast live radio.

What's with this if you buy an iPod you are locked into one online music store stuff? Which online music store is that?

I not only buy music from iTMS but from:
allofmp3.com, emusic.com, and garageband.com.

So which store is Microsoft talking about? Napster? If you buy a digital music player with Napter-to-go you are locked into that one and only service and store.

And all this talk about a built in FM radio is bogus. You guys sound like those nut jobs that screamed bloody murder for a iPod that would display photographs. When they finally got their wish with the iPod Photo it was gripe, gripe, gripe, b**** and moan. It doesn't do video. It won't let you download picture directly from a camera. It is too expensive. Wine, wine, wine.

Now I am hearing, it needs a FM radio.

Shut up already. The iPod has been around for 3 years and it is the number one digital music player with 60% percent of all digital music players on the market, and 85% of HD music players on the market.

So it ain't gonna happen.

And what is so great about a FM radio anyway. 20 minutes of talk and commercials for 4 minutes of some no talent screeching.

I just love how the mac-loving fan-boys do their best to twist the other music services to make Apple's seem so grand over the others. Most of the services offer subscriptions, but you don't have to subscribe. You can purchase your music from Napster just like on iTunes. No $15 a month. No extra fees for burning or putting on your player.

So stop the propoganda and actually pretend to understand the other services before spouting off.

Great Radio

FM radio isn't only corporate owned Clear Channel marketing channels. Community radio stations, Pacifica Radio, small jazz stations, and now, new lo- power radio is on FM. College radio is on FM and AM. I listen to commercial free listener supported radio. So if I want to listen to radio on the go, I have to bring along a Walkman in addition to an iPod. If some nameless Chinese company can produce a rip-off of the iPod Shuffle that has an included radio tuner, then surely Apple could add this functionality to the iPod.

Personally, I don't wanna have to pay anything extra for an iPod because 1% of the iPods owners want FM Radio capabilities ... Maybe if enough of you stopped bitching to Apple about it and tried petitioning Griffin or Belkin, they could make you a cheap FM add-on?

Which brings me to another point ... If the FM feature was such an extremely popular request, why hasn't a third party company introduced one? My guess is the demand for it isn't as big as some people would like to think.

It would also seem that people who buy "other" players keep forgetting that the iPod is actually a platform and not just a player. There are other companies who make products/peripherals for it. Apple opened up the device enough to allow others to build on features that Apple didn't see as being necessary.

I don't want the iPod shuffle to be made bigger and clunkier for a radio.

You can buy an FM radio that is smaller, cheaper, and uses less power than an iPod shuffle. Go buy one. Tape it to the back of your iPod shuffle if you like. There - integrated radio.

Heh, I wish I'd noticed this earlier, but at the top of Microsoft's list they say:

"... having the 'right' MP3 player is essential."

With the word "right" in quotes ... which when used that way usually denotes a sarcastic or ironic or questionable usage of the word ... for example, in this case, people buying the "right" player is essential to Microsoft, if not necessarily the consumers. ;)

Two points:

1) Of course microsoft is going to recommend against iPods. Can we all say "DUUUUHHH!"

2) MS makes good points about the lack of features on the iPod. I'm sorry, but apply relies WAY too much on the "s***" factor to sell iPods. It's worked thus far, but it's not going to work forever. Maybe not shuffles, but the regular iPod needs built-in voice and radio recording. When every other player has it but the iPod doesn't, people are going to second-guess buying an iPod, which is not where apple wants to go.

that obscure indie tune?

Interesting that MS would claim that the iTMS limits one's choice in music and then give MSN music, Napster, Musicmatch--even Wal-Mart--as examples of where to shop. We all know iTMS really has the best selection of them all, especially if one is looking for "obscure" indie or jazz tunes.

I did such a test, searching for an obscure indie tune:
"Micro-chips & Fish" by The Red Krayola

The results:
MSN Music -- No
Musicmatch -- No
Napster -- No
Wal-mart --No
emusic -- No
Audiolunchbox --No
iTunes Music Store - YES

I was shocked to find this and actually bought the whol album. Even eMusic or Audiolunchbox, while catering to a more eclectic audience, didn't have it.

I'm sure there are many other obscurities that only iTMS has; do your own test.

I love MacNN and their flame fodder stories. Really. They're absolute experts at posting the story that's guarenteed to piss off the maximum amount of die hard mac heads.

I particularly the following moron's comment: "there is no need for FM radio. stupid idea."

YOU have no need for FM radio. But in case you haven't figured it out yet, apple doesn't sell to only one person. They sell to a wide variety of people, all of which have different opinions, requirements, etc. for the perfect mobile music player. I will ask you this: can you understand that other people have a different viewpoint then you do? That their opinion is not automatically wrong simply because it's not the same one as yours? That opinion itself is neither right nor wrong, just different? If you can't understand that one distinction, then you'll never understand why your life sucks, why you waste all your time on the internet bitching on forums, and why people hate you. Really. I'm not trying to piss you off, I'm just telling you the truth- do with it as you will. "Seek first to understand, then to be understood."

So that you can understand why people might want radio in their iPod (my opinion, which seems to be shared by a significant number of others, based on reading posts here), I put forward the following reasons (which you may not agree with):

1) It seems combersome and illogical to carry around 10 different devices (iPod, radio, voice recorder, etc.) when one device will do. Most people I think would go with a single device, as long as it stayed cheap, light weight, and efficient/easy to use. The reason the huge mult-tasking devices don't sell well is because they don't meet those requirements. Whereas smartphones ARE easy to use, so are becoming more popular then PDAs.
2) I like apple design, so I want more things done by apple. I think a lot of people here are influenced the same way. We think apple could do a good job of making the radio/player/audio recorder seamless and great.
3) Radio/audio recorders have been added to other devices without significant weight or cost increase.
4) Radio/audio recording seems like a natural extension of the iPod's feature set without becoming feature-bloated.

Regardless, I'd like to point out that people are wasting their time by bitching on this forum. Apple is the one that needs to hear the comments because they are the ones that can change the situation, not MacNN. If apple doesn't change the situation, then your only choice is to buy something from someone else. No product is perfect, because as I said before, products are designed for a large number of people, and no two people have the exact same set of requirements. Maybe one day I'll own a company that I can prod into producing a product that meets all my requirements, exactly the way I like it. But until then, I have to choose from the solutions that are available
