updated 08:15 am EST, Thu March 17, 2005

Samsung eyes Apple

Taking aim at Apple's market leading position, Samsung Electronics is determined to by 2007, saying that will ship over 5 million units this year alone--or nearly three times the number it shipped in 2004. The Korean Times: "The Korean electronics giant, currently the world's largest memory semiconductor and LCD maker, but eighth in the global MP3 player vendor market, said Thursday it would secure a 25-30 percent global market share and 50-55 percent of the domestic MP3 player market by 2007." The report says that Samsung will use aggressive marketing campaigns worldwide and launch dozens of new MP3 players to help it achieve its goals. Samsung believes the market will shift over the next 2-3 years to having 3-4 major players, including Samsung, Sony, and Panasonic as well as Apple.

    Get In Line

Get in line Samsung. Creative is currently taking their shot at Apple.

Apple should put up a take a number machine at the door of the iPod R & D department.

    Oooh

I'm assuming, since its the Korea times, that the 'domestic MP3' market they're talking about is the Korean (South Korean at that) market, not the US or world market.

Of course, haven't all the companies come out and say they're going to grab a huge hunk of the player market? I sure hope Apple's not betting on the "the iPod is cool and in, so we don't have to try anymore" approach, because the iPod is on the way out as the 'must-have uber-cool product'. Next christmas, its not going to be all about the iPod, and Apple will be lucky to sell half of what they sold this year.

    Oooh- baby...

    Testudo,
I'll take that action. I'll bet a sawbuck that this year Apple's shipments of iPods is at least _double_ last year's. That includes this xmas vs last xmas.

Apple isn't standing pat on the iPod by any stretch.

Yes, but neither do buying trends or, gasp, fads, which the iPod is. This years big seller is next year's "Remember last year's big seller?"

Yeah, testudo, music is really a fad. Not like music has been around since the beginning of time or anything. Ever heard of drum circles? The iPod isn't going anywhere, and it will at LEAST double last year's sales numbers, if not much much much much more.

Uh no, music isn't the fad, the iPod is. After Christmas this year, I walked into my office with my iPod on and people who were once complete and utter luddites asked me about my iPod, when I got it, what's on it, etc. They asked because they either got one for Christmas or gave half a dozen of them as gifts this year. And another coworker told me about her kids who are saying everyone's already got one so don't bother giving them out for birthdays and such.

At least in the east coast, iPods have nearly saturated the market. And yeah, people also getting pissed about the expensive accessories. A friend just got her iPod and a week later, having spent $60 on a case and an FM transmitter said, "I see how this scam works now and I won't be falling for it again!"

I think the iPod will do very well this year but I doubt it will be the "it" item to have next Christmas.

    no fad

At least the ipod HAS accessories. Their is a whole industry that has been created due to the ipod, and the ipod is not a fad. That has been discussed at great lengths on every site.
