iTunes prepaid cards

Apple has used Austin’s South By Southwest music festival to unveil a new line of the that are sold at retail stores nationwide, reports Playlist. Unlike with Apple’s original Prepaid Cards, the new iTunes Custom Cards are linked to specific songs, albums, or playlists. When you redeem the card, the item it’s tied to is downloaded to your computer. Over 200 bands appearing at SXSW are distributing their own numbered, limited edition iTunes cards. Some bands and their representatives freely pass out the cards on the show floor while others distribute the cards at shows, listening parties, and press events.

    Very cool.

That is innovation for sure. Wow, I not sure how I feel about that, but hey, if they are paying for it, they can link it up to whoever they want.

    Why Apple rules Music!

...and this is why Apple will rule the download music industry for the foreseeable future - it's not just because the iPod is better than most 'iPod Killers' out there; it's not just because iTunes is a better way to organize your music; but it's mainly because Apple is VERY smart spreading and diversifying the product, and in keeping it in the public 'mind'.

The Pre-paid cards were already a brilliant way to spread their brand, but now having cards that are linked to specific songs, artists, etc... is plain brilliant, as now they have provided the industry, artists, and pretty much anyone with a perfect self-promotional tool.

Funny, you don't see that from Real, Napster, or any of the other also-rans.

    This Is Why Apple....

This is why Apple will continue to succeed and others will continue to play catch up.

    sweet

I had this exact idea while driving on the freeway a few days ago. Apple is on top of things!! Would also be cool to give friends 'custom iMix' cards with playlists you create for them as presents. Of course, I still like the idea of choosing my own music, but the concept is there it seems.

    One step ahead!

Now they just have to start custom silk-screening them and selling them retail! :-)
