Motorola, Apple differences cause iTunes phone delay

iTunes phone delay redux

Apple's , according to Motorola who downplayed the perceived problems with carrier networks (as previously reported). Reuters reports that "In response to a question about why Motorola did not show its upcoming iTunes phone at CeBIT, Motorola said it tends to display its products before they go on the market but Apple's Chief Executive Steve Jobs does not. 'The first thing you're seeing here is a merger of two different industries with different ideas of launching products. Steve's perspective is that you launch a product on Sunday and sell it on Monday." Motorola said it is on schedule to deliver two phones that can play music downloaded from the iTunes service this year, with one coming on the market in the first half of the year and another in the second half.

    Not quite

"Steve's perspective is that you launch a product on Sunday and sell it on Monday."

Launch a product on Sunday, sell it on Monday, deliver it in 5-7 weeks is more like it. That's why the iPod Shuffle, case and dock I ordered on the 25th of February isn't due to be delivered until the 15th of April.

    Re: Not quite

Actually, its more like "Announce new product with three variations in May, available for immediate order. Announce the first two will be "shipping" in June, and the last model in July. Start "shipping" the two models in June by sending out 6 of them, be backlogged for another 2 months. Delay the July model until August, then begin "shipping" that on Aug 31 by sending out 2 of them (which will need to be returned because they won't work) and be backlogged for another 4 months. Finally get everything deliverable in a day's time frame only because everyone has stopped buying your product because (a) they're waiting for the upgrades to fix various problems, and (b) they got so sick of the wait times they either bought a PC, another Mac, or just kept what they had. Delay announcing next version because (a) you oversold the potential of the CPU you use, and (b) you need to wait until your product that isn't selling to sell out so you're not stuck with lots of excessive stock. Keep waiting as people continue not to buy your computer, because they know you must be releasing an update soon, being its been 9 months without an update. Stand-off until May. Repeat whole process."

    Whine, whine

Since MacWorld, I have ordered three iPod Shuffles, one new iPod Mini, and one Mac Mini, all at different times, though mostly in February, and the Mac Mini this month. All arrived within 2 weeks. None of these whiny scenarios are currently in play. What is in play is Apple's underestimation of market demand, which is the source of the current crunch, not what any of you describe above.

    dumb strategy

why isn't itunes on every moto phone?? why do they need a special phone to run itunes. if its moto's strategy to have a separate itunes line it won't work. they need it on every phone.

True, the ipods & mac mini were immediately available ( wasn't there a small delay on the 1G shuffle though). But you do have to admit that they have had some rather long waits between the anouncement/order and when they started of shipments. I think some good natured ribbing is in order :)

You have a good point, but they did ship when they promised in most cases, just not nearly enough.

the above post is just about IE 7. Since people in the mac world think news about upcoming products raises to the level of criminal activity, I guess another one bites the dust. This time the big criminal is e-week.

Steve Jobs is just a control freak. If I need to buy a cell phone today, I'll just buy whats out there...motorola itunes phone? Never heard of it.

    Steve Jobs is a hypocryt

I bet the motorola itunes phone will be announced, in stores, and in peoples pocket long before I ever get that iPod shuffle arm band I ordered like two months ago. Apple's product announcement procedure is more like: "OK... Jon Rubenstein and his boys just finished apoxying the first one of these iPod arm bands together which were previously only in existance from that computer generated photo from the graphics department. YEY! Lets call a press event and start pissing people off by announcing these today and saying they will ship in 2 weeks, collect everyones money, then say "hahah you morons, now u can wait." I've been waiting for an iPod shuffle so long that my grandmother saw how sad I was and she knitted me one. Who is going to wear a "knitted" arm band? You can get beat up for wearing something like that.

    It's called...

    It's called stock manipulation.

The goal is to rack up the sales before each quarter's end. IF sales are sluggish, and there's a new product on the horizon, Apple announces the product, rakes in the sales prior to the quarter's end, then worries about completing the manufacture and delivery.
