YDL on iPods, FW drives
Terra Soft Solutions today announced support for bootable iPods and FireWire drives--both of which are immediately available from Terra Soft with Yellow Dog Linux pre-installed. The company is offering a bootable iPod or FireWire drive, which contains a full installation of Yellow Dog Linux, including all applications, data, and /home directory information. User can boot both G4 and G5 Macs from the iPod or FireWire drive--without any modifications to the internal drives. Terra Soft is iPods and LaCie-branded external FireWire drives with Yellow Dog Linux pre-installed for a premium over standard pricing.
"While the goal of this project was to simply enable bootable FireWire, I took it one step further and incorporated Anaconda, a patched 'parted', and a clever partition resize tool. I just couldn't put the project down. I wanted to be able to install directly to my iPod from the Yellow Dog Install CDs ... now you can do just that," according to Bill Mueller, a Terra Soft software engineer.
Terra Soft has created a hybrid Yellow Dog Linux v4.0.1 #1 Install CD that incorporates the changes required to install to an iPod or FireWire drive from the graphical installer. This hybrid CD installer is immediately available through YDL.net Enhanced accounts.
Bootable iPods are available in 20GB ($390), iPod photo 30GB ($440), and iPod photo ($540), while pre-configured LaCie FireWire drives are available for in a pocket 40GB model ($227) and in 5.25-inch drive models: 160GB ($230) and 250GB ($280)
