huh? So you think Apple doesn't have an internal x86 version of OS X? I'm sure Steve-O has made sure that MacOS will run on any common hardware in short-order.

If CherryOS was about a technical achievement why are they charging for it?

Right now the PearPC is about technical achievement - emulation of PowerPC architecture on x86 - not as a replacement of OS X on PPC. Comment on it being slow is like what Dr. Watson says when he is constipated: "no s*** Sherlock."

Actually I found the commments on its speed welcome. I was considering installing the trial on my Dell Precision, but will not now that I know how slow it is. I remember VirtualPC, so comparison's to that were quite welcome.

I don't think anyone was really flaming anyone here (except you). Read the Slashdot article (as many have suggested) if you're really looking for some flaming.

Of course somewhere within Apple there is a copy of OS X that runs on x86. This is as certain as somewhere within Microsoft there is a copy of Windows that runs on PowerPC (no, not NT 3.51) or somewhere within IBM a PPC prototype that includes x86 instruction set.

However, for a couple of guys to come out of no where to write a emulate for PPC on x86 using C++, I considered it to be a great technical achievement.

As for comment on speed, if one reads general tech news sites (or heck, do a quick search and it is there right on PearPC's site as well), you would have found out 10 months ago that this was sloooow instead of waiting for comments on Macnn.

Since buying an old Mac is as cheap or cheaper than this program and you can actually use it in real time, what's the point of a commercial emulator that is so slow. PearPC is free because it has no commercial value. Neither has Cherry OS irrespective of whether it's derived from PearPC or not.

This is just a case of trying to take money from PC folks who are too stupid to look at alternatives (like buying an old G3). Based on Microsoft's success with this strategy, it should make them dump trucks of money.

Actually, the source must be made available, but it doesn't have to be freely downloadable. But you must provide it some way (say on CD or tape or something), but can charge shipping and handling.

Also, on the GPL part of the code has to be released. Any wrapper code and add-ons can be kept private.

Doesn't the Mac OS X Software Licence say that Mac OS X is only licenced to run on Apple Hardware (as opposed to Darwin)???

yes that will be the hard part, finding a license for panther since apple doesn't sell a license to run panther on the cherry emulator.

but, its based on the common misconception that you are buying a panther cd-rom, instead of buying a limited use license. And, quite frankly, since the government doesn't enforce the law, its a moot point and tiresome to argue (believe me there will be someone who will insist with all seriousness that the entire operation is completely legal).

the whole cherryos thing is shady, from the possible gpl violations to the eula breaking nature of it...but, oh well... its an interesting line maui is trying to walk... if piracy is ok to their main audience then I assume they will just pirate cherryos instead of paying for it.

CherryOS is certainly PearPC, repackaged and redistributed without the GPL and without attributing the original author, which are both violations of the GPL. The "developer" of CherryOS is guilty of copyright violation and plagiarism, and we should avoid all of his products, as he's constantly doing this sort of thing. Perhaps he is poor and lazy. But even a poor and lazy person is allowed to repackage, redistribute, and charge hard cash for GPL software if they follow the license terms. Again, read that SlashDot article to see more details including direct analysis of the CherryOS which definitively identifies it as a plagiarized PearPC.
