NYU warns iPod users

New York University is warning its students that ship with Apple's iPod, according to AppleInsider. The university is reportedly warning users against using the white earbuds because of saftey concerns: "The tiny, white earbud headphones have become a telltale sign for thieves looking to hijack iPods in the fast-paced streets of Manhattan. This week members of the campus community began plastering NYU dorms with posters warning students not to wear the standard iPod headphones.....There have been an increasing number reports from students who've been held up by city crooks demanding that they hand over their iPod."

I see at least a dozen sets of white headphones on every subway car. NYC is an iPod town and many more everywhere on the street. You are no more a target than anyone else out there. Still, I guess its good advice for new students from out of town, who haven't figured out where its not safe to flash expensive gear around.

Get better ones

The iPod earphones, though not bad for freebies, aren't as good as ones you can get from Sennheiser or Sony for just $20 - $30 more.

Get the Sony MDR-EX71SL. Very good matched up with an iPod.

Very simple solution:

luggage tags covering the earbud (and ear) that have printed on them: "not iPod earbuds not connected to an iPod."

Use the earbuds that come with the Dell DJ. No way anyone's gonna hold you up for that.

Don't ever hook up earbuds to your 1980's cassette player walkman either....someone goes to all the trouble to mug you and the best you can do is produce the walkman complete with masking tape, now doing duty for the long missing battery cover....well, it could be bad scene.

Here's another idea: wear the earbuds from the iPod but don't attach them to an iPod. When someone tries to steal it from you, they'll start laughing, you'll laugh, and then you'll have a new best friend.

free?

The earbuds are not free. The cost of the earbuds is part of the cost of the player.

Is this legit?

I have an NYU account, and I haven't received any messages regarding iPod use... nor heard any first hand accounts of this.
