Intel shows off Mac mini-like concept PC

updated 07:45 pm EST, Wed March 2, 2005

Intel\'s Mac mini knockoff?

Intel today showed off its own version of Apple's Mac mini at its Intel Developer Forum. In his speech, Vice President Don MacDonald demonstrated several concept PCs, including the Sleek Concept Entertainment PC, which resembled the Mac mini, according to CNET News.com. The square, metallic-colored , which is reminiscent of the Apple's recently introduced Mac, is smaller than the Mac mini, but is only a concept and it is "unlikely that Intel itself would build such a device. The chipmaker often uses its twice-yearly developer events to try to spur creativity among computer makers. Past efforts have seen PCs twisted into all sorts of shapes and even embedded in an Ottoman foot rest...Thus far, the concept PC is just a piece of plastic, literally, although its design showed a clock display and optical drive in front, with ports such as USB, optical audio and FireWire in the back."

    Sophistication!

My favorite part is the loop of masking tape on the back of the remote... very classy.

These look like the concept models I used to make back in college. I'll bet they're solid wood on the inside.

    Windows bloats too fast.

We bought a bunch of "slim PCs" from (then) DEC back in the '90s. When we had to upgrade them a couple of years later because of WIndows 2000, we were stuck.

On the other hand, Panther runs faster on older Macs than Jaguar did.

Whenever someone at Intel, Microsoft, or Dell and the other PC clone assembly plants has the urge to think of something original, they lay down for a while until it goes away, then look at Apple's latest offering.

Yes, the PC world has had mini type or small PC boxes before and yes... Apple did not innovate the concept, but they took better hardware and software, put it into a sexxy enclosure with a level of design and simplicity that only Apple can muster and what do we expect to happen soon...... everyone else to copy it in one way or another to different extents...

I mean that prototype even had the slim CD drive slot on the front upper top area just like the mini mac, but let me say this.... how much space will be taken up by the bigger pentium heat sinks and extra fans.. plus will PC users b**** about no PCI slots or standard 3.5 IDE drives etc...

Time will tell as also, this may not even make it to market, it is to inspire a PC industry with no innovation.

    who cares

This is the same stuff they put out every year. First, Intel doesn't make computers. They make processors. And as the article states, Intel does this to inspire other manufactuers into making non-standard computers.

Unfortunately, the PC makers take this 'spurring' to not do anything sensible, but go overboard, with pyramid shaped computers and sticking computers into ottomans. Sort of like the stupid car shows, where the car makers design these stupid looking cars that never will make it to market.
