History of Mac OS X

Realizing that it would face stiff competition from Windows NT over the next decade, Apple in 1996 acquired NeXT and its OpenStep as a basis for its future operating system, explains MLAgazine in an article detailing the . The article looks at the history of Mac OS X, from the scrapping of the Copland project -- in favor of the OpenStep-based Rhapsody -- to the official launch of Mac OS X on March 24th 2001. The article follows the termination of Copland, the final release of OpenStep 4.2 in 1997, the Rhapsody previews, Darwin, the renaming to Mac OS X, the Public Beta in 2000 (which became the best selling beta software ever), and the final release of Mac OS X 10.0.

    4 yrs & $400 later...

x is nicer than xp in many ways... I just hope they fix the less glamourous but critical little bugs like reversed surname entry from mail into address book, browser speed/compatability, isync/palm field mapping, etc. and add some seemingly basic maintenance features like an upgrade restore capability if an upgrade kacks...

That being said I am loving working in Pages...

    I agree,

I agree, boblicious, but perhaps you ought to check your preferences, and then repair them.
And when you say browser speed/comp. and other competitions, I think they have Windows licked in more than one event...

Disk Utility has the features you are looking for. If you need more features, there are more than enough third party (perhaps even free) utils out there to do the job, sometimes while you're sleeping.

But, can we get any comments from people about how much money they spent on Windows in the last 4 years? That might be a handy comparison!

    Windows Upgrade vs OSX

Just looked to see what it would have cost to upgrade from dos to XP, assuming you could upgrade. Windows 3.1 $90, Windows 95 $99, Windows 98 $164, Windows 200 Pro $179, Windows XP $179. These are the prices I can find, ymmv. Totals $711. This does not count the anti-virus software and spyware software and patches etc.

    Windows comparisons...

I have not spent a dime on Pentium, since I installed DOS on it. It has served as an admirable doorstop since then, and never required any more money to be spent on it - clearly, the PC platform is superior :-)

On the other hand, with the relatively small amount of money (er annum) in keeping my Mac updated with the latest OS (if I ignore the upgrades I get from buy new hardware), I get a troublefree, efficient tool that allows my business to be very productive.

While my PC-using friends pour time, resources, effort and $$$ into their Windows PCs, and that's just to prevnet them from being infected with lots of c***-ware. Once you count the time, hours, and money spent on anti-virus/anti-crapware tools (that invariably don't work), you end up with a far worse ROI (and a much higher per annum cost) than with Apple's OS updates.

What a lame argument from the original posters.
