Apple climbs single notch

Apple is ranked No. 3 in the also ranked No. 3 in the magazine's listing of the most innovative companies, behind Kinder Morgan Energy and FedEx (respectively) and No. 1 in Quality of products/services.

The survey asked the top managers at 582 companies--the largest by revenues in each sector--to judge the competition. In all, 10,000 executives, directors, and securities analysts rated the companies in their industry on eight attributes. It then asked voters to name the companies they most admire in any business from a pool that included last year’s top quartile of finishers plus the top two on each industry list.

Apple also ranked in the survey's top 10 lists in Employee Talent (No. 3), Use of Corporate Assets (No. 6), Social Responsibility (No. 5), Financial Soundness (No. 6), and Long-term investment (No. 6).

It's a shame that this is a subscriber only web-site. I'd enjoy reading what they have to say.
(But not enough to subscribe for a single list)

    Dell?

IBM I might be convinced to understand ....

Dell? Was this survey given to people who has NOT dealt with their support in the last year or two? (They used to be very good ... but lately ... horrific is an understatement!)

    I still can't get it.

IBM deserves too be there for they produce many patents. But Dell? I don't know what they have patented or invented but sell dull PC's. I would never, never get it.

    Nobody admires Dell....

Don't see how. They produce garbage, innovate nothing, and clone other people's ideas. What's there to respect? Nothing at all.

I can see IBM, I can see Starbucks, GE, etc, but Dell? Come on - Dell is not a company to respect.

    Microsoft????

Where's Microsoft in the list? They've stopped using "venerable" to describe Apple. Is it time to start using that word when discussing Microsoft? Not even the most anti-mac pc person with a rational mind likes them very much.

As for Dell, I can see why they're admired by the corporate set. They make c***, provide the cheapest after sales support and have come up with a business model where they can get away with it (ie you can't take the stinking pile you just bought from them back to the store). This company is every bean counters dream.

Please, a ton of people admire Dell. Company executives for other computer companies in particular would love to have Dell's manufacturing and distribution set-up, where they can sell stuff cheaper than most other companies, AND still make boatloads of cash!

According to you, they "produce garbage" and "innovate nothing". Yet they sell more computers then any other company. They must be doing something right.

When I look at the other

companies Fortune ranked as "most admired", I kind of wish Apple hadn't won the distinction. The last thing I want is Apple to be in a list with Starbucks, Microsoft, Walmart or DELL. Or Berkshire Hathaway - now there's a complete nonproductive loser.

Corporations used to be the fruit of hard work, innovation and production. Half the companies on Fortune's list are corporate bandits and ponzi schemes.

    Your handle is fitting

    LouZer....

Funny, I was just reading Computer Shopper this weekend somewhere and they were reviewing a Dell system. Said it was quite the poor performer on just about everything.

Then there was another article about systems from tier-2 vendors and how you get more for your money than with the name brands. They had a nice sidebar comparing a system from that article with a Dell. Guess what? That system was faster, had better specs, and was $400 cheaper than Dell.

So, tell me how Dell can undercut their competitors? Heck, they are not even cheaper than the cream of the crop PC maker, IBM. Especially when you factor in the new tools IBM ships with their corporate desktops.

Yeah, I want to admire Dell, really. A company that makes c*** and BAITS and SWITCHES their customers.

No thanks. I'll admire companies that produce things useful.
