Apple adds 30GB, 60GB models to iPod photo lineup

New iPod photo models

Apple today updated its lineup by introducing a new slim 30GB model, holding up to 7,500 songs, for just $350 and a new 60GB model, holding up to 15,000 songs, for $450. Apple also introduced the new iPod Camera Connector, due in late-March for $30. The optional accessory enables customers to connect their digital camera to iPod photo and import their photos into the iPod. "By simply connecting the iPod Camera Connector and a digital camera, customers can easily transfer digital images to their iPod photo." The iPod photo includes earbud headphones, a USB 2.0 cable, and a USB power adapter.

So the 60GB unit Apple sent me a few weeks ago to try out was an advance test unit? I thought from the get-go there always had been a 60GB model....?

firewire

Yeah, I noticed that, too...shame that you now have to pay extra for the Apple-invented high speed connection.

But, on the other hand, it simplifies things for Apple, not having to ship 2 cables with each iPod, and not having to have 2 different versions ("firewire or USB model" or "Mac or Windows model") that would complicate matters further.

Use Your Extra Cables

Get a SendStation PocketDock and use your existing FireWire cables!
I got one, works great! I use it with a green 8" FireWire cable to match my girlfriend's mini. She thinks it's purty.

Firmware?

Will there be a firmware update for existing iPod photos that will enable them to do live viewing of images (without having to sync with iTunes/iPhoto first)?

New iPod photo

The previous iPod photo 60G encluded:
AV cable
Photo dock with S-Video out
Firewire Cable

Now cool optional accessories.

Wonder if there will be a firmware update for iPod photo's because the USB is not reliable for large files(>500megs), that has been my experience so far. The firewire cable has been flawless.

iPod photo refurb

The iPod photo 60G is now on the refurb site of the apple store for $479. That is a deal. The new iPod photo has about $90 (+$10 S&H) hardware missing that is in the original 60G.

FireWire is not gone - the cable is. Seeing as most users of iPods are Windows users, the majority of whom only have USB2, including the FireWire cable for the minority of users who use FireWire (Apple users) is not cost-conscious. The Petition-on-line thing is kind of ignorant - it claims FireWire is gone from the iPods when it is not.

Now - if you want to petition Apple for the cable, go right ahead.

That petition proves that there are ignorance isn't a sole characteristic of the Windows camp.

Let's see - if Apple kept the same price - all those people that signed the petition would be happy. But Apple lowers the price by $50, and they sign a petition because they don't want to spend $20 on a Firewire cable. Hey people, you're still saving $30!

Hmmm... all I have to conclude from that is that some Mac users make me sad. :(

FireWire cards!

What Apple should have done was keep both USB and FireWire cables out of the box and ask the customer which cable they need, instead of forcing Mac users to pay the extra $20 bucks because they don't have USB 2.0 on their Mac, which the majority of Macs out there don't have. PC user could just as easily buy a $20 FireWire card and expand their PC since that is what they like about their PC in the first place!

The Big Question is, is it Firewire, and will it import RAW images or just .jpgs??

I really think apple needs to push this as the next big thing for the iPod. Too many people have no clue you can do this, and it's huge. I was going to b**** about them not including radio, but now all I really want is an official apple/iTunes podcast sync solution.

Camera Connector

While I applaud the camera connector, I really hope what you can do is plug a card reader into the thing. The problem with attaching directly to the camera itself is two-fold. One, the battery drain on the camera to transfer images. Two, while transfering images I can't continue shooting with a new card.

Boy, the pr folks sure are busy in Cupertino... notice how the whole concept of bluetooth in a Pod has been forgotten in this discussion over the extra pieces we are slowly losing from out Pods?

Yes, while I'm annoyed at dropped stuff that we "used to" get, I CAN console myself with prices being driven down. I'd love to have the dock, but now it's going to be a 60 buck edition.

Podcasting

The big deal about podcasting is the ease of the whole operation. With RSS-enabled broadcasting, it is really simple to create and broadcast your audio files, and it's really simple for the recipient to receive and upload the files. Once it's set up, it's transparent and automatic. There is a rapidly-growing body of programming being created without the involvement of any of the commercial media outlets.

It's iTunes and iPods that make it possible. We've had the ability for several years to create audio programming, save it as a .mp3 file, and post it for downloads. Nobody had the time or patience to do it very often. Podcasting makes the process Apple-elegant and clean, and that makes all the difference in the world.

FireWire 800

I can understand why they dropped the FireWire 400, it doesn't make sense since USB 2.0 is about as fast, though it is sad that Apple isn't even supporting their own technology. Plus, when the iPod first came out and windows machines didn't have FW windows users were hacking their system just to get the iPod work. But why doesn't Apple add support for FireWire 800 for the iPod photo? It makes sense because photo files have the potential to be much larger than AAC files. Wouldn't all they need to do it add an 800 port on the back of the dock? Or is the iPod connector not capable transfer seeps up to 800?

The iPod itself doesn't support 800. It's not as simple as adding a connector. It needs a new Firewire controller on its logic board.

Apple only dropped the cable to save some money. In turn, they dropped the price, by even more than their cost for the cable. This is a good thing.

Don't be fooled. The cable is less than $2 to make. Apple strategically removed the cable to cater to the majority. If it were $20 of savings, why not just cut the price by another $20 and supply NO cable at all and let the users buy their own, just like the Mac mini?

Sigh. It does not.

First, cost.

Second, availability - only top-of-line Macs have FW800.

Third, the 1.8" hard disk (4200 RPM) in iPod barely saturates the bandwidth of FW400/USB2.

Lastly, Apple shares a lot of blame for firewire not gaining wide acceptance. Instead, we have these pathetic component, DVI, HDMI, etc ways of connecting content to display when one firewire cable would have done it.

Really?

MrKlin, are you telling me that FW would be an acceptable video cable? That would be awesome! Component is ridiculous, and I've personally broken the pins off of two S-Video plugs trying to fit the damned thing in the port from the other side of the TV.

Come to think of it, isn't the S-Video plug an awful lot like the old-fashioned DIN-8 cables that ADB used? Are there any disadvantages to using something like firewire to drive a monitor (besides the whole interference issue of carrying the different video channels on one cable)?
