iPod lineup changes

Apple has quietly made several small changes to the iPod lineup and acessories--in addition to is also offering an optional lanyard for the iPod mini for $20 as well as five new colors of the iPod mini armband for $30 each (delivery is 5-7 weeks) and Nike Flight Lightweight Sport Headphones ($20), which it says are designed for 'optimal running comfort.'

    No FireWire cable either

    Apple has also stopped including a FireWire cable on ALL the new iPod models... so if someone doesn't have USB 2.0 and they don't buy the FireWire cable separately, be prepared for LOTS of people to be complaining about SLOOOOW sync times.

    sucks...

    Yeah, it sucks they've dropped the FW cable... annoys me that they seem to be doing everything to discard this excellent technology.

    However, I also think they have a great line-up, the best yet. Every price point is hit on... unfortunately, they've essentially dropped a lot of the items that used to come in the box. If you now want a dock, it's really going to cost you... close to 60 bucks for the cable and the dock. But I'd kinda much prefer the less expensive prices.

    FW --> USB2

    If they are going to stop supporting FW, they better be investing money in making better USB2 controllers for their computers. My G5's USB2 ports are not nearly as fast as it's FW 400 ports.

    Get real

    The fact of the matter is that Apple is selling more iPods to current PC users than Mac users. And how many PCs have FW ports? Lets talk about a green and waste less society. I support Apple's move! And for $20 for a FW cable vs the price reduction. Good move!

    As for the dock. Heck, buy one if you want one or get one of those fancy speaker dock.

    Woo-hoo!

    Ok, so they're including a few less things with the 'Pods. You can also now get a 30GB iPod with a color screen for $350, a 60GB one for $450, and a mini for $200--that's hardly a ripoff.

    If you want the dock and FW cable, shell out the $60--the 60GB model is *still* $90 cheaper than before.

    I've already got a 4G iPod, but if I didn't I'd probably get one of the 30GB ones--it's just the right balance of features and price.

    Oh, and I'd also like to point out that Wintel users are far more likely to have USB2 ports on their computers than FW, and every modern Mac also ships with USB2. USB2 is a bit slower than FW, but the hard drives in the iPods aren't exactly frighteningly fast anyway, and the extra 20-50% isn't going to make that much difference in synching in the real world--3 minutes vs. 2 isn't that bad.
