    Stupid petition...

That petition is ridiculous. Apple lowered the price to account for the missing cable. If you want one, then buy it. You aren't paying more than you were yesterday.

    Speed

And besides, USB2 is rated for more bandwidth... :-)

    re: Speed

USB 2 is not faster. it's typical intel marketing nonsense. firewire is peer to peer, USB requires a PC and uses the processor to assign transfer tasks. even in optimal test situations where the computer is just transferring data firewire always beats USB2

    Good not to include

I've too many firewire cables that came with varius pieces
already (an external CD-burner for a titanium powerbook, the
camera firewire cable that came with the powermacs), several
    external firewire drives.
I think it's good not to clutter the environment, in the end everything
ends up in landfills. So, get only what you really need.

Yeah, I agree. Let's see, iPod mini + Firewire cable is $220. Yesterday it cost you $250, what is peoples' problem? For many people one or the other will do. I prefer Firewire myself and would buy the extra cable, but for people who don't need it, why burden them with the extra cost?

    Cut the price another $20

How about pricing it at $179 and just buy your own damn cable--USB 2.0 or FW, or even NO CABLE AT ALL, because we already have one or we want to use a dock?

    Firewire first....

.... USB2 is junk anyway and my TiPB doesn't have it. Firewire is superior as its sustained throughput is higher than USB2's.

Let the Windows USB2 people eat the cable charge cake.

    Smart move

Actually I think this was a very smart move by Apple. While I am an avid Mac fan and user, I still recognize that the bulk of the marketshare are Windows PC users. Most Windows PC users don't have FireWire as an option, and they're also typically people who think that Dells are a much greater deal than Macs in terms of the price.

Furthermore this will make it simpler for the bulk of iPod users, being able to use one cable to connect it to the computer, as well as take on the road for plugging into the charger.

I realize this means older Mac users will probably need to shell out some cash to get the extra cable, but as previously pointed out, it's still cheaper from what was offered before, so what's the rub?

Also, if you previously had a dockable iPod, I'd imagine that those older FireWire cables would still work on the new models, wouldn't they?

Let's hope this move by Apple helps to move more iPods, and some of those PC iPod users become Mac switchers.

Ditch the petition. If I were Apple, I wouldn't listen.

    First iPod you can't use

Firewire has been on every Mac made in the past 3 years. USB 2.0 has only been put on Mac's made in the past year.

So unless you drop a $1,000.00 on a new computer this is the first iPod (and Apple branded product) a Mac user can't use straight out of the box.

Yes, one can drop $20.00 on a $4.00 cable,(I guess the extra $16.00 is because it is white and it came from the Apple store) but why should Mac users be the ones to spend the extra money to use with Apple's own computer?

I agree with the ones who are saying why not make the Windows users drop the extra $20.00 or not include any cable. Many printer makers do not pack any cable with there printers.

What if Apple included Microsoft Word but made you pay $60.00 for Appleworks?

Yes, even though Windows users make up the majority of iPod owners, Apple should alienate THEM and force them to pay more. That's a great business move.

Now, that 'no cable included' thing would be good, except what happens when you can't get the cable you need when you buy the iPod? Its not a standard USB or firewire cable, you know.
