Apple to rename Rendezvous as part of copyright deal

Apple to rename Rendezvous

In the coming months, Apple will change the name of its Rendezvous networking technology to "," according to documents shown to AppleInsider. Last year, Tibco Software entered into a trademark dispute with Apple over its use of the Rendezvous name, alleging that the Apple technology, used in products such as Mac OS X and the iTunes Music Store, infringed on its exclusive rights to the Rendezvous name. In July 2004, the two companies agreed to end the dispute through a mutual out of court settlement. Sources close to the negotiations said that, as part of the deal, Apple agreed to phase out its use of the "Rendezvous" name in time.

Boy people are pathetic these days... Like when Jaguar got pissed over apple calling Mac OS X for that. Uh yeah, I walk into an Apple store wanting to buy a Jaguar car or at the Jaguar dealer in hopes of buying apple. Come on give the people a little credit here! We ain't THAT dumb!

Huh...

Kind of a shame, since Rendevous was actually a pretty good name. I don't like Bonjour at all--sounds too one-way and friendly. Voila sounds like a much better idea; gets across the ease, even if it lacks the "connection" meaning.

Or how about something bland like Apple GetTogether.

bonjour sounds terrible when you're renaming rendezvous. Neither is accurate since it's more like 'Fumble', as you fumble across machines (stumbling already being taken by drunks and hackers alike). Why not zFig or iFind OpenTalk too...just not bonjour. Blech.

Come on Steve, OpenTalk is what it should have been called all along. I never really liked Rendezvous as a name, because it implied a central meeting point (and therefore a central server). But it's not centralized, and that's the whole point..machines can be found on the network by their Rendezvous name without a DNS server, or some directory server.

OpenTalk sounds like just what it is...AppleTalk updated for the modern era, and it's open to all standard IP protocols.

�Bonjour� is an extremely poor choice for a multitude of reasons. You know that the Americans are just going to massacre the pronunciation, just as they do with �voila,� making it sound like �wahlah.� I know I�m going to cringe during the next MacWorld Expo when I hear it used. Don�t forget how Steve Jobs pronounces Jaguar as �Jagwire� instead of the American �Jagwahr� or the British �Jagyuahr.� Don�t forget that most Americans study Spanish or even German instead of French in their schools, so the pronunciation is going to make every Canadian and French citizen cringe and roll our/their eyes. I hope this isn�t Apple�s final choice.

Calling it what it is?

Apple could continue their iFamily naming scheme, and call their mobile network the "iWander." As used at local coffee shops and other internet hot spots, the meaning might quickly evolve to "eyeWander."

I will never, ever, ever use this term, even when I'm troubleshooting machines at work.

Just when Apple is starting to convince the PC robots that Macs aren't toys, they turn around and do this. Nice move, Apple. Maybe Steve should wear a dress and put on some makeup when he makes the announcement.

"Bonjour" is too peppy and I don't think "Hello!" really jives with what Rendezvous does.

Now, the Japanese word "aibiki," which can mean "rendezvous" as well as "(romantic) date" is very nice (and the component ideographs ("to meet with drama" and "to pull/attract") are good, too): (1) Japanese is currently culturally and technologically with it, like Apple, (2) Apple users love their Macs, (3) maybe Sony will be so impressed with the choice of a Japanese word that they shower Apple with millions and make all their hardware fully compatible with Apple products!

About French

I'm an American, but after studying russian for the past 3 years, I noticed American attitudes about foreign languages for the first time.

It's not pretty. I used to think the French thing was a kind of joke. But I occasionally try to talk to my co-workers about the Russian marketplace, or the language, or issues for non-english speakers, and after a while it became obvious...the joke never ends, because its no joke.

The nationalism and lack of tolerance for other cultures is pervasive.

Oh well, nothing new here, but having lived it myself, it took a lot to open my eyes.

How about "KooMBAHYA" instead?

Open Talk is even a better name- but so many network admins hate Apple Talk so much that Open Talk just sounds like a redux.

I like french people and cheese and stuff, but this is a stupid name for a networking technology.
