Gates talks iPod on ABC

Microsoft's Bill Gates says that he is not an iPod user and doubts claims by a previous Wired News news article saying that . I use the Creative Zen which is a fantastic product. That's another space where, even what we have today, whether it's iPod or the other things are only the start of what we're gonna have in a few years. People are gonna want choices. These things are going to be smaller or better, cheaper. So, music has changed. The age of the CD is really coming to an end.

I guess he forgets to mention that their solutions are not multi-platform eh? Some choice if you are "forced" to use windows in order to use those WMA players and services. MSFT has not updated the mac version of WMP to support the other stores.

Nobody want's a TV that will crash or get viruses Bill. I don't want a DVD player that runs windows either.

Wired said 80 percent of digital player owners at MS have iPods, not 80 percent of all MS employees.

He went on about "choices" on the non-Apple side of things in an interview with Peter Jennings tonight. An iPod user is not restrained from using iTMS.

Yes, the iPod is a cool device desired by the hip and wanna-be hip. And Gates doesn't own one? I can't believe that. He's always seemed to be just on the edge of hip.

Oh, and for this post An iPod user is not restrained from using iTMS.

I think you forgot some negative in there, like a non-iPoid user, or 'from using something other than iTMS".

Reading that interview makes me sick.

He is such a snake, the way he twists words trying to make it sound as if Microsoft is the almighty creator.

Somebody should...

send him a G5 with 30" display and an iPod photo, set the computer up with spyware that would allow evrybody to find out if he uses it and how and then we could have a good laugh. You know how they say that you have to try the mac to really like it? Well this would be a good move...

It's amazing how Gates credits his success as creating great software. He then ads "And I think my most important work was the early work � conceiving of the idea of the PC and how important that would be, and the role software would play, having standards there." That's interesting, and I suppose he wants us to believe that Al Gore created the internet too.
Later Gates states, "Well the biggest thing we did was we invented the field. That is there were no other companies doing what we were doing. The idea of the PC, the idea of the software industry � that was something very, very unique. There are companies like Xerox had a research lab that did a lot of forward looking work. In fact, the whole interface you see with windows and with the Apple McIntosh a lot of the early ideas came from Xerox. A lot of the good people who did the work there are now here at Microsoft taking those ideas a lot further. And so, it is important to acknowledge that we build on the work of others. But if any one company has done a lot of unique work, breakthrough work, risk-taking work, that's gotta be Microsoft."
True, Apple did get the rudimentary idea of the GUI from Xerox and then build upon it. Whereas Microsoft blatantly copied from Apples earily GUI OS. What's next Gates?

Wow, he says people are going to build these things smaller, better, cheaper... someone in their PR department forgot to clue him in. Been there, done that, it's called the iPod shuffle.

That is interesting. I recall using PCs with DOS and early Windows (windows 3.1), and I can tell you one thing for sure. There weren't any standards that anyone followed that I could tell. Programmers did things their way for their programs. UI was hit or miss (it still is, how many of MS's original but stupid key combinations are still in there? Alt-F4 to quit, Ctrl-F4 to close a window, F5 means refresh, Ctrl-Insert is copy, Shift-Insert is Paste. And what really is irritating is half of these shortcuts never appear in the menus. I could be in word and hit F3 (find next in most other programs) and it does something in Word, but for the life of me I have no idea what, because F3 doesn't show up in any menu).

Memory management, interface design, interoperability. It took 10 years or more to get consistency and standards out of Windows apps. And Apple had it, seemingly, since day one (and if someone came out with an app that had standards issues, that app would be slammed by users and press).
