Wonder why...

it was released as a stand-alone download rather than appearing in the usual Software Update. Could there be some enhancement in the way it updates that the Software Update couldnt handle? Just a theory, but any update is a good update. Well, technically.

Does this mean the PowerBook G5s are comi....

Yes!

Resolves an issue on certain Power Mac G5 computers where a fan cycles erratically at unexpected times, such as when Seti@home software is running.

Now I have to get home to see if works.

Needed 2 reboots

I installed this on my dual 2.5GHz G5 and got the runaway fans on reboot. It didn't cause a kernel panic, but the fans slowly ramped up to max. Rebooted normally after this and everything is ok. Strange.

P.S. Snappiest update yet!

Must say this...

Installed a couple of hours ago on an iMac 17" 1.8, and it really does seem (won't use the word) more responsive...seriously. I've been running through a number of applications, and all is rolling very well here. Only thing I haven't tried yet is printing.

worst update yet...

10.3.8 is the absolute worst update Apple has ever released! Oh, wait, 10.3.5 was the worst. Or was it 10.3.2. Anyway, one of them was the worst. Nothing works. Everything quits. Apple better get its act together or else. What else I don't know but they better. AND the neat system utility my cousin Aric wrote stopped working under 10.3.8. Darn the bad luck.

Well, I can't use any of my other desktop themes until Shapeshifter gives an update or Apple offers a quick fix. APE Manager, which allows me to colorize my dock, is fine.

stable and cool

okay, so why the heck would an OS patch make my PowerBook run cooler ? It's been slaving away on stuff all day and the temperature is sitting around 49.5 and I don't remember when the fan last kicked in.
It's also been very good... some weird beachballs I'd been getting have gone away and my trackpad seems to be behaving better (last few days I'd been seeing spurious motion)
Sure, I've high hopes for Tiger coming out next week, and the G5 PowerBooks being announced at the same time... but this'll tide me over until them (well, I might get a new speed humped PowerBook in a couple of weeks.... I hear they're very snappy !)

Fine

I've only had two problems with this update.
1)I have an ALi chipset USB external HD that stopped mounting around OS X 3.5. USB logger showed the device but it would not mount. Around OS X 3.6 I could no longer install a USBFamily 2.8 kext without a panic and with this update the chipset will not mount and is not even seen. No Updates available anywhere. no solutions.
2) Shortly after I updated to OS X 3.8 my cat threw up. Coincidence?

HD Problems

Here's the first quirky report of the day...

I upgraded to 10.3.8 last night, and then shut my PowerBook G4 down.

This morning, I booted up, pulled up Safari, and started browsing the news sites and MacNN. I got a system notification that my startup disk was filling up. I had 9GB free last night... when I checked my home directory window for the size of the hard drive's free space, it was down to 700MB and dropping like a stone.

I rebooted, and it was down to Zero KB free. I moved a few files onto an external FireWire drive -- one of them was a disk image of 200MB -- and it still read Zero KB free.

Time for a reboot with an few fsck's, which is where I am now.

I installed the updated and safari did seem browers. Then I checked my bank account, and I had more money in my account then I expected. I had $129 more than I expected...coincidence? Could be...

but software updates give me a feeling of accomplishment.

MaxieZeus, you don't happen to have the iShock driver installed do ya?
It apparently causes the symptoms you described. The MacFixit website has a thread about it.

Quark 6.5 stopped working after the update. Well, actually i am not sure it was really working before the update, but it definitely doesn't launch now. Oh well, on to InDesign.

I'm looking at installing this update today (pending all the reports from y'all) and so far just based on me threatening to do so...

the cat has vomited, the cows are mooing and their s--t smells like well... s--t, the old dog is barking out on the staircase as if she can't make it back up on her own, AND...

three new guppies mysteriously appeared in the fish tank.

Honestly, I can't tell if this is a good witch or a bad witch.

Maybe I should just fire up my trusty old Atari 1040ST?

nearly snappier (sry)

I downloaded the new upgrade and my G4 867mhz is running smoother, however I am still unable to get nyu Mac to go to sleep. Any ides out there???? please. Macaddict suggested it is a software issue, however tried their tip to no avail.
