Apple may not be in an operating system fight with MIcrosoft, but is heating up and Microsoft is challenging the dominance of iTunes by giving away a free download every day through Saturday. "he daily freebie will be limited to the one editorial pick from Microsoft's MSN Music staff members that they think will win a Grammy in the song's nominated genre. Of course, Mr. Softy isn't known for being the generous type. The five giveaways are being done to promote the fledgling service, and Microsoft is opening up the offer only to adults willing to pony up their credit card information." Fool.com says that Apple is also facing challenges on other fronts, including Napster, satellite radio upstarts XM and Sirius as well.

    What an original idea

    Giving away free songs! If only Apple hadn't though of that - over a year ago! And they still give out at least 1 free song a week, depending oni f they are still doing the Discovery Download thing.

    credit card info?

    Given that a lot of the public in recent years has lost confidence in Microsoft from a virus or security standpoint, I'm not sure requiring credit card info in exchange for a free song is the greatest idea in the world... :P

    The napster subscription service uploads from your device all the songs you've played and how many times... You stop paying, and all your subscription tunes go poof! What a great service.

    itunes givaway

    Apple should copy this exactly. Not to say that we need to copy MS to make it (like they didn't get the idea from iTunes either...) but if I were running the joint (which, thank god i'm not) if they want to compete against my store, i'd offer the exact same songs for free on those days. Then that gives you no reason to look in the ms store.

    ... the best product and service are actually the market leaders. No wonder they're scratching their heads in Redmond - this notion is completely foreign to them. They can't understand why the world isn't clamoring for their sh*tty offerings like they have in the past.
