Still reading through it, but one interesting detail should give pause to those who criticize Apple for cutting into third-party developers' markets. Apple approached Adobe to develop a consumer-level video editing package. When Adobe said no, Apple chose to buy the Final Cut code from Macromedia and do it themselves. The rest (iLife) is history.
Apple could become a huge mega-company with 100% market share, and complete autonomy and control over all computers, networks, hardware, IT people, and users.
They could also just wither and die.
Or anywhere in between.
Gee, that was easy.
"this isn't a company about 5% marketshare"
ya, well...it won't hurt to have 5% marketshare.
Apple is not about to belly-up?
Damn I guess I should not have listened to all those people and shorted AAPL at $14...
;)
that Apple was history. Surely he knows more about Apple's future than Fortune. He's a technology writer and besides, look at the size of forehead. He's got to be about the smartest guy on the planet.
Seriously, I doubt Apple will ever get to 90% in the PC market, but they will get above 5% maybe even hold above 10%, although that day is a fair way off. One thing is for sure, they have the people to ensure that they won't be going under any time in the foreseeable future.
I can't begin to imagine what was put on the drawing board for the first time today at Cupertino. We won't see it for 3-4 years but I'll bet it'll end up falling into one or more of 4 categories. It'll either be elegant, simple, revolutionary or absolutely mind blowing. Only time will tell.
A friend who works at Apple told me about the day that SJ came in and told them his vision for iMovie. And we all know how that turned out.
