Free HyperEngine-AV tool
Arboretum Systems has released a free version of , its comprehensive video editor that offers a "trackless" workspace for free manipulation of video, audio, stills, and text in an infinitely expandable window. "HyperEngine-AV was made for all moviemakers who want a tool that let them create while literally thinking 'outside the box,'" said Georges Jaroslaw. "We believe that we have succeeded in this approach: If you can see a movie in your mind, you can easily create it in our software by placing and editing clips in the workspace. The user interface is completely transparent."
The company says that media clips can be imported or captured in realtime from a FireWire DV camera using remote machine control. The clips appear in the document window in the form of objects that can be freely arranged and are distiguishable by their colors and the data they contain. Users can also easily position clips along the timeline as well as perform other video manipulations, including stack, trim, time-stretch, split, and fade. The application also offers custom text areas, an editable (keyed) background, a project overview display, and more.
The program includes built-in video transitions such as Alpha Compositor, Channel Compositor, and Chroma Key (compositors) as well as several transitions (Crossfade, Explode, Implode, and Zoom) and wipes (Gradient, Iris, Matrix, Push, Radial, Slide, etc.). It also includes video effects such as Alpha Gain, Brightness, ColorSync, HSL Balance, and RGB Balance and nearly a dozen audio effects include Hyperprism's Auto Pan, Band Pass, Band Reject, Hi Pass, Flanger, Lo Pass, More Stereo, Ring Modulator, etc.
HyperEngine-AV imports all commonly accepted Mac formats including 3DMF, AIFF, Audio CD, AVI, BMP, Cubic VR, DLS, DV, FLC, FlashPix*, GIF, JPEG/JFIF, Macromedia Flash 5, MIDI, MPEG-1, MP3, M3U (MP3 Playlist files), MPEG-2*, MPEG-4 (MP4), Photoshop*, PICS, PICT, PNG, QuickTime, SF2 (SoundFont 2), Sound, Text, TIFF*, Virtual Reality (VR), and WAV. It runs on Mac OS X 10.2 or later, although Mac OS X 10.3 is recommended. The company recommends a G4 processor running at 500MHz or faster.
The company offers Silver ($100) and Gold ($300) versions of its software with more features, effects, and functions.

Such great potential...
but it's too flaky.
