Critics question iTunes

New subscription-based music services that enable users to take music with them may strategy for the iPod. Mark Farish of Samsung likens the iPod/iTunes situation to that of the original Macintosh, "the reason Macintosh failed in the PC market was because it didn't license its technologies to other manufacturers, which Microsoft did."

    renting music?

180$ a year for all the music I want but as soon as I drop the 15 a month I dont get the music anymore? how does that work? Anyways 180$ a year is more than what I currently spend at the Itunes music store....more like 100$ a year.

    Open the iPod

I agree the music rental model is flawed, but Apple really should look to their own history and open the iPod. They said it themselves: the iTunes music store will not make much money; it's a vehicle for selling iPods. Thus, open the damn thing up and let people put any format on there.

    valid point

I don't think the subscription model works, but I do take issue with the iTunes-only setup. I think other players should be able to interface with one's iPod.

Though I would probably not use it, I think the choice should be there.

    Re: Open the iPod

So you want them to lose control of their own hardware. Right.

These people are morons, true. Rental music hasn't worked so far, the iPod ate and excreeted their lunch long ago, and they're still acting as though they have a chance? Idiots, at best.

    Just imagine

You are hiking with your iPod at Machu Pichu Peru listening to Hooverphonic when the thing stops dead. You forgot to renew the subscription before you left!

    No music for you!

    The whole point...

.. of opening the platform is for Market Share. ITMS/iPod has a strong majority already. There will be a time to open up, but now is NOT it.

    Not for me

As for me I want to own my music (at a fair price) if it something that I like. The comments above show how much you would have to pay per year to keep you tunes alive under the subscription model. Not interested.
Also, of course, anything that is designed by Microsoft (Digital Rights) I would have to view with heavy suspicion at the least.
One possibility that I think might be useful for the future would be a way to really "try out" a song (the whole song) for maybe a week or so and, if you decided that you wanted it, you could buy it then. If you didn't want to buy, its playability would expire. The 30 second preview given within iTunes often is not a good indicator of a songs desirability. This ability should be provided without signing up for any type of subscription services. But I would not want such an ability to be designed by the big company in Washington State.

    Hardware cost

The cost of an iPod is nothing compared to the cost of an original Mac twenty years ago. An iPod was just about a calculated impulse purchase for me. The cost of a Mac back then would have bought my dad a new car.
