iPod a great social tool

In an article on WebProNews, Neville Hobson describes his "first true ." He writes, "I had my first true iPod experience today. You know, the feeling of coolness as you're out and about in public with those little white buds sticking in your ears with the white cables dangling down that disappear under your jacket. Yes, I did succumb to strong temptation when I was in the US last week and I bought an iPod Mini ... You get looks from people. Knowing looks, especially from those with dangly bits in their ears. Might even exchange a smile or two. Even a wink if your cable is white... Wow, this is a great social tool."

    It's also an invitation.

...to get mugged. iPod muggings are becoming more prevalent here in Toronto. Two weeks ago, a teenager got his iPod stolen when robbers spotted the white earbuds dangling from his ears.

I'm not a big fan of in-ear headphones, I prefer my black wrap-around Sennheisers. But of course the remote control gives away the fact that I'm listening from an iPod.

    hmmm

Well if you are walking in an area that has such few people, that is suspected to be dangerous... I personally wouldn't be blocking an important sense such as hearing... wearing them on a crowded subway or street makes sense to me.. but never walking alone in the evening... asking for trouble no matter if you have an ipod or not.. people will mug someone for whatever they have in their wallet.. and cell phonts have good value too, and watches... muggings happen.. common sense doesn't always...

    Me neither :-(

I'm not quite up to your setup, Koss PortaPros here. I got some Shure e2cs as well, but no way I'm wearing those out in public, I wouldn't be able to hear anything.

    Weenie

This author sounds like a weenie. He thinks that passerbys are smiling and winking at him because he has an iPod. Yeah right.

And the "passion" demonstrated by an Apple employee is "coolness"? Go into an evangelical church and talk to someone in there... you'll here get plenty of passion and coolness. Watch an interview of Charles Manson and see his passion.

If becoming an Apple fanatic is going to give this weenie more confidence, then so be it. But nobody's getting laid just because they have white earbuds.

    social?

Is this what we have succumb to? Is this what we call "social", passing people by and smiling at them? We all know what your social life is like, that's not very social.

    Hah

Noone gives a rat's arse in Canada, whether you wear those earbuds or not. People just pass by wearing white buds, black buds, behind-the-necks, whatever. People are so oblivious to one another. Noone is winking or smiling at the other. boo-hoo.

Is this what's called "social", btw? Then, as dawid points out, we have a problem.
