Apple sells over 250 million iTunes songs

250 million iTunes songs

Apple today announced it has sold over 250 million songs from the and said that iTunes users are now downloading 1.25 million songs per day--an annual run rate of almost half a billion songs per year. The iTunes Music Store is available in fifteen countries or more than 70 percent of the global music market, according to the company: "When we launched the iTunes Music Store we were hoping to sell a million songs in the first six months -- now we're selling over a million songs every day, and we've sold over a quarter billion songs in total," said Steve Jobs, Apple's CEO. "iTunes is leading the way into the digital music era and together with iPod is changing the way millions of music lovers find and enjoy their music."

i love itunes

i wish tuesday was every day of the week, because i love browsing itunes so much. i just wished there was even more of a better way to find amazing music. i have yet to really appreciate the new itunes essentials, i guess because when i toyed with it, i didn't find anything that pertained to my interest. itunes is amazing.

Once 10.4 is released with the new version of Quicktime I bet we're going to starting hearing knuts-and-bolts talk about setting up a similar service for film distribution. Pair that up with the Mac Mini and you've got yourself quite the tv accessory.

i love sushi

i wish monday was every day of the week, because i love walking down to the sushi stand on my corner and orderin up the 3 temprua rolls for $4.99 lunch special. I have yet to really appreciate the new shushi dipping sauces, i guess because when i order the sushi, i am really blazed and eat it so god damn fast i cannot even taste it after a few pieces. sushi is amazing

apple's getting ready

for adding a movie store. all you have to do is look how they added the music video section to itunes. that may be a test run for buying movies.

i love chicken

You think that Hollywood is going to allow Apple to enable DVD burning of distributed video? Get real, folks.

IF Apple decides to go with video distribution, the DRM is going to be intense. It is NOT going to be a personal video bootlegging solution.

It's gotten to the point that the Apple faithful has tossed all common sense into the wind, choosing instead to live in fairytale land.

Half a billion songs, that's a awful lot... @$0,99 a piece! Of that cake, what's the part going to the artists'pockets ? Someone know ?

Apple Movies

I just want to echo spacefreak's comments -- there's no way the movie industry is going to encourage piracy of their movies. Think of the Apple Film Store as going to the movie theatre in your own home, not as an equivalent to the iTunes Music Store. In a movie theatre, you see the movie and leave without anything but a ticket to show for it. With iTunes, you spend your money and own the song.

I hope there's truth behind all this speculation. I, for one, would gladly stream movies to my own home instead of forking over $12 just for the privilege of sitting in a Los Angeles theatre. Unless, of course, the movies cost $12 to stream. :)

You guys don't think Hollywood would embrace a way to deliver movies directly to a customer for a huge splice of the price? Like noted above with the music store, how much of the money that the consumer pays goes to the artist and Apple? Almost none. When it comes to movies, who will keeps the lions share? The movie companies. With the advent of TiVo and MacTheRipper, don't you think they are already looking for help? With the success of the iTunes model, what's not to love?

But, my sushi stand was out of temprura rolls today so I had to settle for the lunch combo: a bowl miso soup; three carrots; salad; 1 philidelphia roll, and 1 yasagi roll, and a whole bunch wasabi. check apple to tap the asians for wasabi green ipod. trust me or i will say i told you so. wait 3 weeks for the wasabi green ipod mini 5GB and if it does not appear you can come beat me up even. i live in ny

How is it a test run? The videos aren't new, they've been there for like a year. Plus, you can't buy the videos or rent them, only view them. The only correlation to this and some fictional itvs that everyone seems so set on now (can you imagine how much grief apple will get as each month passes without this rumored thing now?) is that they both deal with moving pictures. Beyond that, nothing.

It amazes me how much out in left field people will drive their car to get 2 and 2 to add up to 47.

Ok I got the clever little banter dealing with the itunes music store and sushi, and chicken, but I don't get the rest of it.

I think iTunes is neat. A similar concept might be neat for films.

Can you figure out how to patronize that comment? You do seem to be the master...

forget downloadable DVDs

A typical DVD has about 4.7 GB of data. With a broadband connection you are looking at a five hour download.

This gives you all of the economic issues:
-too few users have the hard drive space for any resonable DVD library size.
-the "iFlick" server would require a ridiculous amount of bandwidth to serve these downloads
-the lack of an Apple hardware device that is dedicated to video playback. Remember, Apple doesn't make much money from the iTunes store, they make their money selling iPods, and the store brings more users in.

At best, you can hope for a streaming, on-demand, heavily-DRMed, pay-per-view movie service which prohibits downloading, but lets you watch a movie around the time that HBO and Starz get it.

EMC you are forgetting about H264. It will allow high compression of DVDs while maintaining quality. This will compress them far beyond what the current DVD Mpeg2 standard is. I think it will come to about a bit over 1 gig per dvd or something. That is still a bit over what a service would be able to offer I suppose, but not out of the realm of the future. I think what everyone is predicting is too far off still. It might be in Apple's vision, but it isn't going to happen tomorrow or something. I think it will be sometime in 2006 at the earliest. We still need more demand for this kind of content, right now is only the beginning.

Actually everyone is writing like its coming May 1st, right after Tiger. Every comment here sounds like everyone's got the latest inside info on apple's latest hardware and plans. Its not "Gee, if Apple were to do video, here'd be a cool way". It all sounds like its right around the corner.

Its like everyone sees the mini as this great theoretical convergence box, when there's no reason to even think this. Sorry, but there's nothing about this box that makes me think "Video is right around the corner!". Its not the size or dimensions of standard entertainment hardware (you know, component size). It doesn't have ANY software to do video capture (so its not a replacement for your Tivo). It has no strong audio OR video output options. All you can do out of the box is play your iTunes (or internet radio) over the internet, or plug it into the TV and play a DVD through a s-video connection. ALL of which could be done last month with an iBook, or two years ago with a G4 tower.

But, alas, no. People will continue to speculate on stuff that they have no clue on, leading to only one outcome: disappointment that such-and-such still hasn't been released by Apple (h***, every time there's a new OS X.3 update, people whine because Safari 1.3 isn't in it, or that Apple didn't announce updated powerbooks at MWSF, or 1800 things apple's not doing to satisfy this customer or that). When the iMac was first released, it was blasted by one website around here (anyone remember the blowhards of Apple Recon?). They were certain Apple should have released a set-top box, so much so that they kept publishing some letter daily until Apple got the picture (hasn't worked yet, but its only been like 5-6 years. I'm sure whenever Apple does it, someone will take the credit).

My point is that idle speculation is all well and good. It just becomes a problem when its no longer idle, but full throttle, and then everyone has an expectation of what Apple 'should' do, and then b****** because they think they've been led astray BY APPLE, not by all those who basically did the wild specualtion.

Of course, if you all want some fancy integrated audio/video/media computer, you could just by one of the many Windows boxes out there that has Windows XP Media Edition on it.

i love my girlfriend

i wish wednesday was every day of the week, because i love meeting up with my girlfriend for a nooner so much. i just wished there was even more of a better lunch hour to enjoy amazing girlfriends. i have yet to really appreciate my new girlfriend's essential-ness, but when i toyed with it, i did find something that pertained to my interest. my girlfriend is amazing.

Of course Hollywood would embrace this ... except that their terror of piracy is much stronger, and even stronger than that of the RIAA and the music industry. (And I guess it makes sense ... one movie is far more expensive to produce than any album or single.)

I'm with the folks who do NOT see the Mac Mini as any sort of logical progression to an all-out home media center. I could be wrong; but if Apple seriously made a home media center I think it would take on a very different form than the Mac Mini: More audio/video in/outs, more/faster hard drive space, intuitive iPod-like controls. I see the Mac Mini as what it is: a bare-bones, low-price Mac that almost anyone can afford.

But IF Apple were to unveil any sort of iFlick video-on-demand service with Hollywood's blessing, you can bet your asteroids it will have a hefty DRM on it much, much, much more oppressive than iTunes or any of the other audio DRMs out there right now.
