NT Times on Mac mini

An in today's edition of the NY Times offers The Times says the iPod shuffle's two-digit price tag has a lot going for it, and could potentially attract iPod users who have been discouraged from entering the digital music player market because they just don't feel a need for 5,000 songs. "The Shuffle says it's O.K. to be one of those people who can't think of more than 100 tunes they really like."

They miss the point of the Mac mini- It is a $499 dollar computer with about 3-400 dollars worth of top-quality digital media software included for free.

but it is good press, overall.

    Portable quality audio...

...convenience and price are my attractions... I can't lisen to MP3s for more than 2-3 songs anyway because of the poor quality, and in fact bought & quickly sold one of the 1G iPods as a result...

Taking a day's music with me is one role for these puppies...

Making an iPod the center of my digital world is another - and would require video to play back my quicktime projects (portfolio)...

There is also the fear of loss, theft & damage with a $600 item...

I would like to see an FM radio version...

    bobo - you contradict...

...yourself too much. If you don't like MP3s, don't blame the iPod, use AIFF or Apple Lossless. Portfolios play nicely on a small iBook or PB.
The 600 dollar iPod photo I recently bought is about the same price(after inflation) as the 1st Gen 5 gigger I bought 4 years ago for 400 bucks. Spend it - you can't take it with you. Oh ya BTW, s**** FM, ClearChannel owns it all and it sux. oh wait, there IS NPR...

Not to mention that you could still put 1,000 or so songs on an iPod in aiff or Apple Lossless. Or, use higher bitrate AAC or mp3.

    50 percent?

Man, what decade are you living in? This isn't the 1970s. Inflation has only been 1.5% in the 2000s.

    MP3's dont have to sux

Sure if you follow Sony, Rio, and Microsoft's advice and encode at 64kbps to get that absurd storage of 2000 songs on a 1GB HD player.

But try encodeing at 192kbps or useing AIFF or Apple Lossless and I think you will find the quality is damn near CD quality.

About the only music you will notice a difference is is Opera, (most) Classical and (some) Jazz.

I personaly can't wait to drop the cheese on a 1GB iPod Shuffle. It will work out great when I go rollerbladeing, mt. biking, snow sking, or at the gym.

    May I remind you...

...AAC & lossles codecs were unavailable when the 1G was introduced... I find AAC much better than MP3 hence the shuffle should work for me...

I couldn't justify the price of a 1G iPod for AIFF because of capacity...

I don't consider FM high quality, but it does provide some contact with the world and additional variety if desired...

    Think about this...

you're in a household that has been doing computers for a while. That means you probably have a monitor and keyboard lying around not doing too much. 600 bucks gets you a mini and a Pod. The big fly in that ointment is the RAM... 256MBs, I mean will any of the iLife apps even launch with that paltry amount? So add another 2-300 for a gig of memory.

As for the Pod, what they are NOT saying (and I guarantee you they are counting on) is that a BIG part of the "market" for this device is going to be people who already have a big one. For 99 bucks I am tempted and I know several other Pod users who will be buying on in the near future.

    OK I exaggerated a little

Inflation's not quite that bad. The big thing for me was passing the "magic" 500 dollar point, but like I say, it's not that much more for today's top of the line vs. the original. More like the price of a trip to the grocery store than the price of a car. Wait, my iPod cost more than my Jeep, oh well it's worth it. And ya, I do kinda still live in the 70s. Far out, dude. I miss the gas prices, but dig the technology.
