Apple to offer delayed QT video of Expo keynote

updated 09:55 am EST, Mon January 10, 2005

Delayed video of keynote

due to the excessive costs associated with the realtime broadcasting: "live webcast video streams of events such as Jobs' keynote presentations, on average, are costly and yield few benefits to Apple as a company. As a result, in recent years Apple has scaled back on realtime webcasts in favor post-event video-on-demand steams, which reportedly costs the company much less."

    What a crock

Why would Apple do this to so many loyal fans?

    Keynote at Apple Stores

    Hello All,

Just wanted to let you know there will still be a live feed at your local Apple Store. I'll be at the Atlanta Lenox Store. Hope to see you there.

How do I know, I talked to a Local Apple rep about seeing the Keynote at the Apple Center where they've shown the Keynotes before the Apple Stores existed and here's what he had to say:

    >> Hello Mark, the "unofficial" word we received on Friday was that Atlanta
    >> office would not receive the broadcast at all. Apparently only Apple retail
    >> stores and fully staffed Executive Briefing Centers would receive it (The
    >> Atlanta Market Center is not a fully staffed Executive Briefing Center). The
    >> broadcast team has still not given us the final official word but it does not
    >> look promising. I thought you may want to make plans to go to an Apple
    >> store. If/when I hear anything different, will let you know.

    Hope that helps,

    Mark

    What a crock...

I know - as a loyal fan I'm crushed and devastated - I don't know how I'll continue to go on...life has lot all meaning for me...bwaahhhhhhhhhh!

Don't you have anything better to do with your time? Like your job? There'll be a million different sites that will update you on the important stuff.

    sure sign

This is a sure sign they're going to be introducing a low cost Mac, as they are cutting down on unnecessary expenses, such as live video feeds.

    More time

Perhaps the delay will give the design staff more time to come up with a replacement for the butt-fugly pseudo-OS X window title bars they've insisted on using for speaker name overlays on the live broadcasts.

    Not surprised

"As a result, in recent years Apple has scaled back on realtime webcasts"

    Yep.

As I said in a previous post, I'm disappointed, but not surprised. Now the question becomes, do I read the spoiler streams, then watch the keynote just for the heck of it, or do I try to recreate the excitement of live by covering my eyes and ears until I watch the rebroadcast?

I lean toward the latter course, but given that whatever new, amazing thing the Steve introduces will doubtless be gracing the front page of apple.com, trying to avoid spoilers is probably a fool's errand.

    Oh well.

    Quicktime 7

Apple may be delaying the web cast to introduce. Quicktime 7.

Steven Jobs could say at the end of the keynote. "Oh and one more thing. If you want to watch the keynote tonight you have to download QT7."

Then Wednesday morning Apple can anouce that 6 million users downloaded QT7 making it the number 1 internet audio/video player.

    ZDTV

I miss ZDTV. They would show the keynote. Then they scaled it back to show only highlights. Then they stopped showing it all together. Then they became TechTV. Then they got bought by G4 TV to become G4TechTV. Then they fired everyone who was at TechTV and only kept the highest rated shows and hosts. Then they fired the hosts of the highest rated shows except XPlay and now its c***. BUT they could make up for all that lameness if they'd show the keynote. I hate G4TechTV.

    Sever Overload

Oh yea .. smart move Apple

Every mother's son would be trying to access the live stream, and that would be nothing but trouble. Believe Apple already has several records for # of viewers of internet broadcast, from previous Keynotes, and this would be another. But, with all the newbies and $tockbroker type$, half of them would get booted off every 30 seconds or so, and THAT would do a harm to Apple which can't be measured, duh.

So, until servers, and cost, can be managed to handle the load ... any of us who know the score will be happy to "avert our eyes" till 10pm or so EST.
