Gates: iPod is dominant, but things will change

updated 02:10 pm EST, Thu January 6, 2005

Apple has had 3 hits

Discussing the success of the iPod, Microsoft's Bill Gates said that Apple has done what many companies have been unable to do: "They had a hit with the Apple II, they had a hit with the Macintosh, and they have a hit with the iPod, so , and that's very impressive. There are a lot of companies that don't have three hits. And in the same way that Macintosh helped get people exposed to the graphical user interface, the iPod is doing a great job getting people to think about digital music." However, Gates was convinced that the market would continue to evolve as there was more competition: "In the long run, there will be a lot of people making digital music players, and we think that there will be a very different market share with dozens and dozens of companies. And other than Apple, all those player makers are signing up to work inside the Windows PlaysForSure ecosystem."

    Play what for sure?

Play what for sure the next virus that comes out. Nobody needs to know play for sure because iTunes does play without any problems and no viruses at least on the Mac side.

    Yes

Signing up to work inside the Windows PlaysForSure ecosystem will ensure their doom.

    Play for Sure...

I think they used that phrase because there was no way they could legally use "Works for Sure" for a Windows-based product. That would be completely fraudulent.

3 hits he forgot a few

Three hits he forgot at least one more. OSX which is kicking a** on Windows. No spyware, no viruses, and no break ins. Wait four hits, the iMac, wait five hits. The iMac flat panel G4, wait six hits, the iMac G5.
Wait seven hits the Xserve and raid. Funny that Bill only thinks Apple has made it all this time on only a few products. I thought he was smarter than that. Maybe that's why he hasn't made Windows secure yet because he thinks Microsoft is unsinkable. He needs to watch Titanic the movie or the sinking of the Bizmark. Both sunk because of there short sidedness.

PlaysForSure? This is the actual marketing name those geniuses at M$ came up with? That's pure gold. Repeating it in my head makes me giggle. I've never even heard of this new strain of the DRM virus before, yet he's claiming the industry is backing him? I do have to say he deserves some credit for having anything at all positive to say about Apple. I expected less of him.

    hmm..

strong words from an arrogant giant. I've heard stories about arrogant giants...

seriously, the empire is being chipped away very slowly, but also surely.

I see some things starting to change for apple, and i really (even though it sometimes appears that way) don't see apple making the same mistake twice.

    No distraction

Geez, leave it to the fervent followers to distort. What purpose does it serve to discuss virus other than to troll or flamebait?

As if iTunes does not run in Windows OS?

If Mac users are to be widely respected (instead of constantly being labeled as a zealot), please learn how to stay on point.

Sure, PlayForSure is a dumb name but it does what it says: WMA files you bought will be playable in any PFS certified players. If you go the main iTunes page, http://www.apple.com/itunes/, no where does it say that our iTunes store download will work with iPod only.

    For Sure? Like at CES?

So, it Plays for Sure, huh? Like Bill's demo of Windows Media Center at this week's Consumer Electronics Show? Like that?

In case you missed it, it was (for me) the highlight of the show. Bill, on stage, and his great Media Center PC froze up. It was hilarious. And typical.
