Apple, Google gains in 2004 like Microsoft of ol\'

Apple, Google like old MS?

Paul Andrews of The Seattle Times says that Apple and Google are , while longtime Goliath Microsoft is "enduring the humiliation of cross-examination by disenchanted shareholders. The answer has to do with innovation. Apple's iPod and Google's ads have proved themselves by being smarter, better designed and more useful than anything the competition can produce. The simplicity of the iPod and its ease of use have made it the one must-have device this year. Among my circle of friends, half a dozen iPods found their way under the Christmas tree. ... But investors rewarded Apple and Google because both are building success the way Microsoft once did -- via platforms. How far they can extend their platforms, and whether Microsoft can hop aboard and seize the pilot's wheel, are the big questions of 2005.

    Waiting for Microsoft?

The author says he's waiting for Microsoft's response to Apple and Google, says he's waiting for Microsoft to innovate once more. ........

What kind of crack is he smoking? All jokes aside, Microsoft doesn't have a history of innovation: they've bought or stole everything they make and own. Personally, I think the only innovation Microsoft has come up with has to do with Active Directory, but I think their implementation of it stinks. And the ONLY reason they have such decent tech is because they've been in the business market for so long the customers demanded such a feature. Even then, it feels like it was hacked on.

No, Microsoft doesn't innovate. They take other people's ideas and implement them in an often insultingly-crappy way. If they're not doing that, then they're purchasing their "innovations". Microsoft these days is unfocused, trying to figure out how to make money in an industry they really don't understand. Between their flurry of OSes the last few years, their ventures into Media Centers and wireless products, as well as other miscellaneous still-born tech attempts and pricing schemes, you can just tell they're lost in the tech world they inadvertently helped create. h***, the only thing they did well these last few years was X-Box!

You want innovation? Look at Apple and their direction. In comparison to Microsoft (and just about any other tech company out there), they're focused like a laser beam in the direction they're heading. Microsoft is an unfocused joke in comparison.

"I think the only innovation Microsoft has come up with has to do with Active Directory"

Not so! It's a complete rip off of Novell's Netware technology. It's one of those cool technology that Microsoft was able to steal before other people found out about it. I forgot the original name Novell had for the technology--I have to check my Network+ book--but they have since renamed it to Netware eDirectory.

So stick with your original thought. MS has stolen or baught everything they own or make.

    Re: Hold That Thought

Novell was definitely first to market with Novell Directory Services (NDS), which came into existence in 1993 according to --> http://www.informationweek.com/766/ptynov.htm

I distinctly remember this service being a part of NetWare 4.1, so MS was indeed late to this party as well.

    MS innovation

MS's true innovation is their market muscle. The way they buy technology, push out competition and the ability to recognize that most people will accept an inferior product at a lower price. With the exception of maybe Walmart, Microsoft is unequalled. That is their "innovation".

    Whatever...

"The simplicity of the iPod and its ease of use have made it the one must-have device this year."

Not at all. Complexes devices are also must-have (Blackberry, etc.).

The Ipod is a must-have because Apple has successfully marketed it as a STATUS DISTINCTION product. You own an Ipod: therefore, you're cool, you're hip, you're in, you're one of "those". Apple-fans thrive on the distinction between Us and Them.

The Ipod is popular because it's "simply"... distinctive.

Anything else is blah blah blah.

Same for Gmail accounts. Get over it.

    re: whatever

Not true. There were plenty of wearable and/or distinct music players that were around and available before iPod. It was Apple's design, music software, hardware integration and marketing prowess that made iPod what it was even before Apple realized they could market this as 'hip'. To ignore that the iPod was huge before it was mainstream is to ignore the fact that this truly was a great product (for many reasons).

One more thing: you can't market a product as 'cool'. You market the product the way you want to market it and then you let the public decide. If there was a way to market 'cool', Microsoft would have bought their way into it already.

    Re: MS innovation

You're right Spiral - from the beginning, MS has shown the most innovation in their marketing, not their product. But you may be confusing hardware and software when you speak of "a lower price." Microsoft products aren't cheap - their OS and their software is among the most expensive in their respective categories.
