Report: problems with Apple's new Cinema displays

updated 09:10 am EST, Wed November 17, 2004

Apple display problems

Apple's line of Cinema Displays is , according to a report in the IT Enquirer: "Most acutely affected appears to be the 23-inch line, which can exhibit a strong pink or yellow hue across the display that cannot be cured by colour calibration. Industry reports suggest that LG, which supplies Apple with LCD panels, may be the manufacturer in question. Apple's own web board is awash with people who are mad at the problems....One poor chap is onto his fourth display, after receiving three faulty units previously. Another Mac Addict in Japan reported that every 23-inch display in the Shinsaibashi Apple store was defective, and a similar story is reported at locations across the US mainland."

    Ouch...

...this sounds serious! And LG!? Were they formerly JIL? Didn't they used to be on the budget end of the curve?

    What problem ?

I have the 23" Alu HD Cinema display and find nothing wrong with it. This stong pink-yellow hue isn't seen on my display unless I'm color blind!

Just what is one supposed to look for to determine if one's 23" is inflicted with such a problem ?

    Confused to say the least.

    Re: What problem?

It is mentioned above what the problem looks like. If you don't see it, you don't have it.

    It's True

It's not just the Apple displays. I bought a new Sony 23" which must use the same LCD and it had a pink tint that looked like blush. I returned it and looked at the Apple models at a local store and they were all noticeably pinker than the smaller versions, especially when viewing something gray. I purchased a 20" Cinema Display and haven't seen any problems.

    Apple should go back..

LG Electronics USED to be that cheeseball company/brand outta Korea called "Goldstar". Remember them? One step past SounDesign and one step below Emerson. Apple needs to go back to Samsung as their OEM LCD manufacturer, 'cuz Sammy's stuff rocks (even their own branded products are of good quality). I wonder what recourse these 23" LCD buyers have? How many times are you gonna take it back and replace it? Will Apple dissuade you from taking it back? Curious how Apple will handle this, IF it's as widespread as being reported.

    I have this problem.

I have the 23inch display and have had it for a month. I pulled it out of the box and it was perfect for the first hour. Once it warmed up, the display started to cast all of the grey and darker colors with a pink cast. It got the point where I had to calibrate it to get the pink out, and even then it didn't get all of the pink. Then, if that wasn't enough, after a week, the sides and bottom of the display started to become more yellow then the rest of the screen. Making the desktop all white, you see the the display had yellow bands on the sides and bottom.

I've seen displays with this very problem at two CompUSA's, and three Apple stores, including the SoHo store. I've called Apple twice about this problem but still have not made an attempt to return it because one dude at the Apple Discussion boards had his returned four times, and another had it returned three times. I just decided to wait to see if Apple officially recognizes that there's a problem, like when they recognized that the Powerbook AU 15" had white spots on its LCD.

I'm glad this is finally out as it might prompt a response from Apple.

    So frustrating

Just curious: Do these new LCD displays actually get switched on before being put in a box, and sold to the end user?
