Mossberg slams iRiver player, recommends iPod Photo

Mossberg on iPod Photo

After comparing Apple's new , renowned Wall Street Journal columnist, Walt Mossberg, writes: "The iPod Photo was just as easy, and satisfying, to use with photos as it is with music. It's a winner, if a little pricey. But the iRiver player is complicated and clumsy, designed by techies for techies." In conclusion, Mossberg says he cannot recommend the iRiver for average, nontechnical users. "But the new iPod Photo is a great choice for storing and sharing digital photos. We just hope it comes down in price."

    Given past reports...

Given his track record you can't say Walt is even when it comes to Apple products. He's seems to be pro Apple. Of course that could just be that Apple make great products and the competition is pretty poor most of the time which is usually true.

He is definitely right concerning the iRiver though and I do agree with his sentiment about the iPod Photo's price point. It's much too high for my taste but plenty of people will buy it. Eventually it'll come down just like the other iPods and when it does, my G3 iPod will be getting due for replacement :-)

    Good review

I'd agree with Walt in that the iPod photo is overpriced. Apple should be concerned with the competitors this holiday season. They may not have Apple's marketshare or quality even but many do offer more features and cost less. I really don't understand why Apple doesn't offer an FM tuner at the very least, on all of the iPods.

I hope there is some truth the the Flash based iPod rumors because at this rate the iPods keep getting more and more expensive and adding features that are cool but available only to those who can afford them.

    Walt Switched

A few years ago ole Walt wasn't as pro-Apple as he is now. he gave bad reviews when they were deserved.

Apple has released many compelling and well designed and solid products over the past few years... iMac, Mac OS X, iLife, PowerBook and iBook lines, G5, iPod, etc..

Apple has consistantly set the standard and raised the bar with every update, upgrade or new product release. Walt is just mirroring the trend. People listen to him. That's good all around!

    fm tuner

Benhur, I really don't understand why Apple would offer an fm tuner on the iPod. What is the fascination with a tuner on the iPod? I have all my music and audiobooks right there. Why would someone want to listen to a radio station with commercials, talk, etc. I get my music/content when I want it where I want it. Keep it lean and mean.

    fm tuner

h***, forget an FM tuner. Nothing on FM radio worth listening too (unless you like endless commercials and the same old songs over and over again). However, an AM tuner would be bitchin'. You'd be able to catch the local ball game, listen to Rush spout off about this or that, or hear how the Red Sox suck from some caller in Poughkipsie.

    FM Radio Tuner

The #1 reason people want an FM Radio Tuner is so we can tune into one of the many closed-circuit televisions at the gym!! When you're working out at a gym that has banks of television sets, the only way to listen to them is to tune into certain radio stations on your FM Radio Tuner.

The FM tuner is useful to listen to Howard Stern!
However, it won't be for much longer since he's moving to Sirius satellite radio next year. After that, indeed, there won't be anything worth listening to on FM :(

It's an iPod. Not an FM radio. You want an FM radio? You can save lots of money.

    FM tuner would be cool

I remember when portable cd players first came out with an included FM tuner. Some people said, "Why would I want to listen to the radio when I can play cd's" Grant it, the iPod hold much more music but it's about giving people the option.

Already, people have commented that they wouldn't want an FM tuner but an AM tuner. Why not both? I like to listen to the game, listen to the morning jockeys who often play music I don't have. Get the weather or traffic report. Listen to NPR if you want.

Joelcpa - You may have all your music right there on your iPod but ther is a lot of music that I first hear on the radio. Besides, I don't see how adding an FM tuner would not allow the iPod to stay "mean and lean". Give the people the choice.

Some other company is going to eventually get the ease of use thing close to Apple's. It may have an FM tuner, bluetooth connectivity, and connect to MSN website (which still doesn't compare to the iTunes Music store but it's getting there). Then what? Apple may start losing market share.

Yes the Bluetooth thing is far fetched but I would love to be able to use a cordless headset or remote. Maybe even use my phone like you can do with Salling Clicker for Mac computers. I would like to be able to get a call while listening to my iPod and and my Bluetooth phone mute the sound on my iPod or notify me on my iPod screen. Who knows what could happen when given the option. Let developers figure out how to make this work. Photo cabality in not that revolutionary for the iPod, it was inevitable. But right now it comes at a high cost. Just add an FM tuner for now, Apple.

    Flip Flops?

If I hear this right, the above posts are saying that the only people that can buy iPods are those that can pay for them. Well, yes, if you want something, you generally have to pay. If you don't have the money, then you can't get it. Ok, that's out of the way...

Next up, the above posts suggest it is too pricey. It sounds like people want things, but again, don't want to pay. Right. That's going to happen.

Lastly, if you start ADDING features to the iPod (read: FM/AM) exactly how is that going to make it DECREASE in price?

Forigive me if I read this all wrong; my head must be spinning from the election!
