Jobs on photo, video iPod

At today's music event, Steve Jobs touted the iPod Photo as the "next big thing," while downplaying video: "We think capabilities along with the photo playback. In order to keep the iPod small, Apple needed to keep to a small screen size--one that doesn't work for watching a movie: "No one has any video content to put on them, and even if they did, the screens are much too small," Jobs said, adding that the iPod is the "wrong place" for video."

You know something? Steve's right. The iPod would suck at video. Well, videos longer than, say, a music video.

Not that i'm encouraging video, but the PhotoPod's dock has a video output, so you could watch the video either on the pod or through a TV. This could justify a $10 price tag, although quite a few DVD's are less than 8 bucks now.

the iPod is perfect for video. But not for watching it on the iPod, but for watching it from the iPod on your TV. Portable TiVO.

Photos are not the next big thing. Maybe if they made the iPod a 1.2 megapixel camera or something like that, but the iPod is not the place for photos -- and ESPECIALLY not at a $600 price point. A day of disappointments (again) in Apple land.

Exactly: Portable TiVo. This is what I have been clamoring for, for quite a while. Who really wants to watch a movie on a 2" screen anyway? Not many I'm sure. But the ability to record (via an input on the dock) and schedule time recordings via iCal, and then take that to work or the living room to watch would be sweet.

I agree - video playback via the video out cable -- great for presentations or for marketing folks to preview commercials -- how trendy would that be to show up with an iPod instead of a VHS tape.?

Adding an XM or FM Radio module would be very nice. I think I read that XM maybe introducing a portable version. Heck, add TV tuner and we could at least listen to a small color TV screen at the office.

I do think Steve is wrong on video - does he really think looking at Photos is any better on the screen? -- yes the iPod screen is to small but allowing video out to a display or TV would be ideal. I see some pratical uses for video on the iPod and I'm sure we'll see it in a future version -- no one really considered photos 3 years ago.

The iPod

might as well become a PDA. God dammit, it's really getting annoying how apple beats around the bush with the PDA capablities of the iPod but they continue to do it half-assed. My T3 already does music, photos, and movies. The only reason the iPod is better is because of the scroll wheel and the hard drive.

Who honestly keeps 10,000 pictures they need to constantly show to other people? Digital photographers. That's it. Whereas everyone loves music and many people have hundreds or thousands of CDs.

One thing I think has been done very poorly is eBooks. There could be a market there, for someone who gets eBooks done right. The iPod was revolutionary because people already had CDs they just didn't have a way to put all of them on a single device. Apple needs to do more then just stick photos on an iPod: it needs to meet some need that isn't filled by some other device.

what about movie size?

i think you are forgetting something. If you want to be able to play a movie on a iPod then on a TV, the resolution should be pretty high.

Do you know how much space a MP4 720x540 1 min movie takes?
Around 15MB. That's 1.8G for a 2 hours OK movie quality.
on a 40GB ipod, that would be 20 movies. No music and no photos.

I think DVD are not going away soon.
Or when we reach affordable 2 or 3 GB Flash based memory, then why not.ipod would have a slot to just slide a "Return of the King" Flash memory.

the problem...

is that a video iPod wuld have to be much bigger and then it would only fit in men's pockets and would lose it's sleek appeal. I'm not sure I want an iPod photo, but a 60GB iPod would be nice. I do think that is beating around the bush and they might as well remake the Newton with a 60GB hard drive.

You don't own a digital camera, do you? One of the first thing that hits you convenience wise it to be able to readily show your friends the pictures you've taken. But eventually you are gonna have to dowload those pictures to your computer in order to take more pictures.

Bam!

I think they are making good progress by using parts of the iApps to incorporate in the iPod. In addition to iTunes, you can use iPhoto, iCal, and iSync. If there is a movie store I would rather see it on an iBook or Powerbook.

What's the minimum speed requirement for a .mp4 again?

The CPU in the iPod is far from able to do video...

It would be too big, too hot, too power hungry, way too expensive...
