updated 04:10 pm EDT, Thu October 21, 2004

iTunes/iTMS compatibility

Apple has begun warning users with older version of iTunes that their dated clients will . According to an AppleInsider report, those with older versions of iTunes are being advised to update to the latest version of the software (4.6), as previous versions will soon no longer be supported. "Get the latest version of iTunes. You are using a version of iTunes that will soon no longer be supported. Upgrade today to take advantage of the latest application features and Music Store enhancements," according to a message displayed on computers running the older clients.

    COOL!

Hopefully this means a new version is coming out soon to get those REAL nutz off our coattails.

    Features?

They don't want anyone sharing their music across subnets anymore, possible with the older iTunes version, and are trying to find an excuse to enforce it.

    Re: features?

Its more likely they just don't want to have to support older versions with the store, which is a pain in the neck (its sort of like forcing people to upgrade from IE 3 on windows to use the internet, because the old version just sucks and websites shouldn't be forced to support all that crappy HTML). And, unlike the web, they control both sides, so they can force those to update.

However, this isn't new. I believe sometime after 4.1 came out, the same message warning 4.0 users arose (4.0 being the only one that could share over the internet without other software). And, unless you use the iTMS, this doesn't affect you. You can continue to use your older version without hassles.

"ITunes, Apple Computer Inc.'s hugely popular online music service, is gearing up for a Canadian launch that could come as early as next month [November], music industry sources say."

Yeah, they've been talking about an "imminent Canadian iTunes Music Store launch" for over a year now.

I'll believe it when i see it.
