EMC acquires Dantz

, the privately held supplier of backup and recovery software for small and mid-size businesses. Founded in 1984, the company produces popular software titles such as Retrospect, which provides both backup and recovery functions for file servers, desktops, and notebooks for both Windows and Macs. "Dantz is a strategic acquisition in line with EMC's strategy to extend our reach and focus on the fast-growing SMB market of next-generation high-growth customers.." EMC said that that Dantz would continue to operate in Walnut, CA. The cash transaction was valued at less than $50 million, according to the release.

    Woohoo!

Maybe they'll finally (a) bring back the personal edition, and (b) make the software actually usable by people (sorry, but the last time I used RetroExpress, they still wouldn't let you save a backup set, if you didn't want to backup an entire drive, you had to manually pick what files to back up over and over and over again).

    Uh oh.

Please don't drop Mac support. rsync is great and all, but it's no Retrospect. We have no other decent enterprise level backup solution.

    Mac Support

I contacted one of the people whose names listed on the press release, and here response was semi-heartwarming:

Dantz has tremendous capabilities and market share in the Apple Mac
protection and recovery market. We intend to continue to support the
platforms that make up the entirety of the SMB market - which includes Apple Mac

    Absolutely no match for Retrospect.

    Works behind the scenes

Retrospect is a pain to set up, but once you do, it's set it and forget it. Hopefully it won't disappear.
