Review of iPod competitors

The Dallas Morning News has a and how they stack up against the "luxury car of hard-drive music players": the Philips HDD120 Recording Audio Jukebox ("not even close"), Dell Digital Jukebox ("if you prefer function over form"), Creative Zen Touch ("Maybe"), and Rio Karma ("Yes, if you're more of an on-the-go listener than a docking-station listener." The article says that "Apple's recent redesign of the iPod helped it catch up in some areas where rivals were pulling ahead, especially in battery life," also highlighting the innovative click-wheel iPod. (Note only the Rio Karma is compatible with Mac OS X.) [free reqistration required to view article]

    Myth of $$$

    The author says:

"But let's face it – the iPod is the luxury car of hard-drive music players. You pay as much for style as you do for function. The recently upgraded versions cost $300 for 20 gigabytes and $400 for 40 gigabytes."

And yet all the ones that he compared to the ipod were also $300 for 20 gigabytes, except for one that was $280. So why does iPod get the "expensive" rap?

    Cost

MSRP for the other devices is only a suggested price, not a law like Apple pricing. The 20GB Karma can often be found for a tad over $200, and at times even cheeper.

The docking comment was odd, considering most people at their computer will be listening to music off the computer. The Karma dock has the advantage of having ethernet as well, meaning I could put the player in the living room attached to the stereo and still send music to it.

    iPod has deals too

You can find MORE deals on less-popular items, obviously--that's inevitable.

But you can find lots of iPod deals too. Amazon and various stores are often offering rebates or free extras. Even Apple has its promos... they recently stopped offering 20GB iPods for $69 and Minis for $29 to students buying an iBook or PowerBook (which themselves have a nice student discount as well). How could a student NOT buy an iPod at that price?

    cheaper, please

It's a dumb article because if you're going to spend $300, you may as well just get an iPod.

I'd honestly like to see a review of some cheaper alternatives, like in the $100-$150 range.
